The Coldest Winter ever in Atlanta provokes the interests of a fearless murderer who crawls from the past to invade upon the life of Dr. Claude Callaway. A nightmare comes to life for the WASP Task Force. Tempers flare between the FBI and Fulton County CSI Agents when a high profile murder case involving a Prosecutor’s young daughter is tied to murder cases in Lakes Charles, and Shreveport, Louisiana. Ethics are questioned when top local officials plot against Dr. Callaway. And his close friend, Special Agent Renee Thomas questions his whereabouts while they both chase down the ghost from the past. As Dr. Callaway’s world becomes increasingly chaotic, he’s challenged by his personal life, and a killer who puts the dead in winter. Only this time, death walks closely in front of Dr. Callaway, whispering to him through messages carved on the bodies of victims. The words read in flesh and blood, ‘Ask Mary.’ Every second is crucial as cold death surrounds Atlanta in the Dead of Winter.

Excerpt

Bourbon Street wasn’t as crowded as usual during the evenings but the sidewalks, filled with questionable strangers and citizens that peddled musical talents for the drunken dollar. Dionne, beautifully bronzed skin, green eyes and sleek thighs staggered alongside Carol who was a stunning brunette. She often changed her hair color to satisfy Dionne’s appetite. Dionne liked her so-called equals slimmer but more erotic than she was with a peculiar sexual craving for trying likings of the abnormal. They were leaving the Cotton Club where action was pushed to the climax every day and every night even if the sour street corners were empty.
They strolled through the dim lit alleyway to Dionne’s 1965 silver Maserati, not knowing that someone was following them. It was Peterson, the District Attorney of New Orleans. He stood in a dark alleyway, careful not to be seen by anyone while he watched Dionne tongue her lover, giggle, embrace, lightly scratching each other’s skin.
He was following her not only because there were several murdered prostitutes that were connected but he was fascinated with her good looks. The way she carried herself turned him on but he wouldn’t publicly admit it even to the darkest side of himself. He struggled with the fact that he would never reach a part of her that would allow him to feel powerful as a man. A pat, that would make him believe he could conquer the world. He wasn’t her type but she got off on control no matter who it was. She controlled Deputy Gilder who once led the current investigation of serial murders of the most desirable prostitutes. He was corrupt. He was out of control and in the open about his dealings with drugs and crime. Peterson cut him loose and since he had the opportunity to watch and follow Dionne, he did.
There was a lot happening in New Orleans and surrounding counties. Not that it had just begun, it was a build up of many situations. Murders went unnoticed. Drugs were trafficked in the city at will with the help of the law, Attorney General Lye Garrett. It was all untouchable until Sharon Nobles went missing. She was the neglected niece of Senator Nobles.
Carol stopped to watch a couple grasp one another. She couldn’t see what they were up to but it was interesting enough to figure out.
“That’s somebody else’s business,” Dionne pushed her along, tugging at Carol’s beltline.
The smell of stale liquor was all over the sidewalk and around unknown alleyways. Peterson took the last puff of a cigarette and dropped it to the pavement. As Dionne unlocked the passenger door for Carol, he approached them.
He stepped forward with his gray hair glaring underneath the street lamps and his thin French stature was muscular. His Louisianan accent was piquant which gave an impression to strangers that he wasn’t threatened by anyone. “What’s the drug of choice tonight? Cocaine? Heroin? Or that new potent stuff they mix with Vicodin?”
“Uh-oh,” Carol jokingly whispered.
He stepped closer. “You know the streets but the streets don’t know you. You’re too smooth.”
“Beat it you jerk.” Carol leaned against Dionne.
“That’s what you do.” Peterson spoke calmly, putting his hands into his trench coat pockets. “That’s what you do. Eat ‘em up. You’re raw. Never mind the sausage. Go straight to the bun. No Up-Side Down Heinz Ketchup. No Stay Cap Frenchie’s Classic Mustard sauce. Everyone’s favorite. Raw.”
“Shouldn’t you be somewhere popping your whacker,” Dionne said with a smirk on her face.
Peterson moved closer. “So smooth and lively. You know how to get away with things. That can lead to some serious trouble.”
“Something’s always shooting off in that teeny-tiny-weenie head of yours,” Dionne said closing the door behind Carol who sat in the passenger side.
“I got my membership,” he explained. “I joined the club a while ago. Like everyone else, I’m watching you.”
Dionne strolled quietly over to the driver’s side of the Maserati. “Then I’ll leave the lights on so you can watch.”
“You always do.” Peterson lit another cigarette, watching Dionne get into the car. “You always do.”
She sped off into the back roads of Bourbon Street, not thinking once about Peterson and his plans to follow her.

Inside Dead of Winter
The Coldest Winter ever recorded in Georgia happened twenty-two years ago where temperatures dropped 8 degrees below zero across the state. There were parts of Georgia that recorded 6 to 22 degrees below zero. And so, Allentini’s bracing scenario in his latest novel Dead of Winter is quite unusual but eerily possible. The story is based in Atlanta where the city has been paralyzed by a hard freeze. Several gruesome murders are discovered and as the killer emerges, Dead of Winter becomes incredibly haunting.
Dr. Claude Callaway, head of FBI’s WASP Task Force, tracks down the monster he discovers to be Jonathan Stevens, an unreal predator. In the meantime, Callaway’s personal life unfolds dramatically and he struggles to maintain his stature. The imagery of a frozen state is incredible and a serial killer stalking everyone sustains an awaiting horror throughout the novel. The reader shares experiences with the characters Dr. Callaway, Special Agent Thomas and Dionne Stevens, who is Jonathan Stevens’ sister and when the final chapter ends, one wishes to read more. The reader becomes attached to the personal life of Dr. Callaway.
Despite Allentini’s relentless efforts to mingle Dr. Callaway’s grueling professional life with that of his personal one, the storyline is centered and the acts of murder are appalling and unimaginable. While the character of Callaway digs deep into investigations, his relation with his fiancée diminishes and he reunites with his hot steamy lover, Dionne. Both are a piece of each other’s history and are stalked by her brother, Jonathan Stevens. Spending the holiday season with one another, the metaphors of a white Christmas are clearly expressed in a daunting way. It depicts modern-day suspense and thriller antics used in horror classics such as original The House on Haunted Hill, Night of the Living Dead, Halloween, and When a Stranger Calls. Special Agent Barry, Dana, Detective Yates and Rita who is Callaway’s fiancée make up a fascinating cast in Dead of Winter.
After a relentless manhunt, Callaway is temporarily suspended from the operation and placed on involuntary leave for additional cases that involved two notorious murderers that were allegedly executed by the WASP Task Force. Special Agent Renee along with Callaway himself visit the desolate woods of the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Georgia alone in search of Jonathan Stevens and what they find is the truth that he’s alive. The winter is so cold that it’s makes the experiences unforgettable in a desolate way. Dead of Winter is potent with anticipation and without mystery. It’s dead in your face.
A series of events lead up to this story but there was one particular stormy night that started it all. Alone with his friend Kasei and a young autistic kid named Oliver, Callaway dosed in and out of sleep while a terrible storm brewed over New Orleans. Dionne shows up at his front door drenched in rain and she has been stabbed several times. Cautiously, Callaway steps back and allows her in and no sooner after that, Jonathan appears from the back of the loft. Years later, there was another night that Jonathan appeared while Callaway is highly sedated, whispering into his ear words of Good Tidings. He spares Callaway’s life. Over the years, Callaway slowly forgets, mentally pushing Jonathan into the bowels of Earth and in the Dead of Winter, he comes back.
