Amazon Amazon Survive Strong Resources
The death of a parent affects thousands of children every year. The depth of their plight often goes unrecognized or unacknowledged. This book helps adults understand the deep impact of loss for a child, and what it takes to begin to heal.
For a child, when a parent dies, it's like losing the world. The fears and unanswered questions often stay lodged in the child's mind for years, undermining the mourning process and preventing true healing.
As the surviving parent, I was faced with my own grief and that of my children, when we lost a husband and father. I saw first hand the result of trauma and bewilderment that confronts grieving families. I wrote this book to help others who struggle with the emotional impact of bereavement.
I have explored the subject through both personal interviews with survivors, and through the data of professional educators, therapists, and sociologists whose experience bears witness to the needs of the grieving child. As a guide and resource for bereaved families, A Child's Grief gives tools for opening up dialogues on comfort, support, and security, and equips adults to truly help their own, or another's grieving child to feel safe and begin to heal.
This book will give you hope and confidence as you struggle with the pain of loss.
Excerpt
When a child learns that a parent has died, the immediate response is the same as an adult's - intense pain, bewilderment, and anger. Yet often, no one knows how to help such a child. No one draws him out, no one explains to her what happened, no one tells him why, and no one gives her assurance that she will be okay. Simply saying, "Everything will be all right" isn't sufficient. A child needs specifics. He needs to know who will take care of him, and who will do the things that the parent did. And, deep inside, a child wants to know who will love her.
