A missing teenager everybody thinks is a runaway; a psychic not wanting to work on a missing child case, and a skeptical private investigator each with their own secrets. Why is the teen missing and can Max and Theresa find Tommy in time?
Barnes & Noble.com
When psychic Theresa Crawford's former beau walks into her New Orleans New Age shop, she senses trouble. Big trouble. Max Lamoreaux hasn't come to discuss their relationship—the private investigator is on a case, and he needs Theresa's help.
Max's godson is missing. The police have declared Tommy a runaway, but Max's gut tells him otherwise. While he's highly skeptical of Theresa's abilities, her visions provide the only clue as to who's taken Tommy. The longer Max works with Theresa, the harder it is to resist his desire for the sexy woman.
As they inch closer to finding Tommy, Max and Theresa also discover that time hasn't diminished their powerful attraction. But Theresa harbors her own dark secrets from her past. Secrets that broke them up before—and could drive them apart again, unless Theresa can learn to trust Max with everything...
She should have locked the door.
Theresa Crawford watched the man close the door behind him with a firm but solid click. Big trouble—she could sense it. Darkness radiated from him in waves.
"Hello, Max." Her soft-spoken greeting broke the silence. She remained seated behind the table draped with various multicolored scarves, studying the man in front of her. Though she'd known him for over ten years, he was too complex to say she knew him well.
Without waiting for an invitation, Max Lamoreaux walked the few steps it took to reach her. Pulling out the chair opposite he sat, straddling it. His long lean frame filled the delicate white chair. His gaze locked with hers.
A familiar sense of anticipation flittered through her like butterfly wings. The hairs on the back of her neck stood at attention. Theresa felt like a frightened animal right before the fight or flight response kicks in. She wasn't sure which she'd do. Given their history, probably fight.
As Max started to speak she held up her hand and indicated for him to wait. Rising from her chair she walked over to a browsing couple, the only customers in the store, and politely informed them the shop was closing early.
At the door, with deliberate measured movements, she turned the lock and flipped the sign hanging in the glass-paneled door to Closed.
Glancing back, she paused and inhaled a long steadying breath before exhaling slowly. Her palms slid down the front of her flowing skirt, wiping away the traces of nervous moisture. Max coming to her shop? Definitely not good.
Facing the table, she opened her psychic channels. Maybe she could get a glimpse of why he was here. Nothing. Max had amazing natural shields. Right now they were firmly in place, solid as steel and just as impenetrable.
Theresa sat and looked up to meet Max's intent stare. She nodded, allowing him to proceed.
The tight press of his lips along with the deep crevice between his strong brows conveyed his discomfort and anger. An uncommon combination for him, she thought. He still hadn't spoken, staring at her with those steely ice-gray eyes. That look sent rippling, sizzling sensations through her. Underneath it all, despite their past, there lurked a hunger which refused to be hidden.
Theresa broke eye contact with difficulty. She could get lost in the storm clouds of his stare. In fact she had, on more occasions than she cared to remember. Glancing down, she spotted the thick manila envelope he'd laid on the table.
Well, that explains it. He's on a case.
"What do you want, Max?" Theresa noted her hesitancy and took a cleansing breath, focused on curbing the underlying nervousness in her tone.
"Same old Theresa, right to the point. As always."
"Look, no small talk, Max. It never works for us. Just get to the point. What do you want?"
With a gentle shove, Max pushed the envelope across the table. She stared at him, waiting. This was his show. He was the one with the questions.
"Okay, we both know I'm not comfortable being here. I wouldn't have come, but Remy insisted. You know how persuasive he can be when he thinks he's right."
Theresa's brow quirked. Remy was Max's brother and had been her best friend for more than ten years. Remy knew how much she hated using her gift, especially around Max. His skepticism had caused hurtful, angry words between them several times.
"You know I don't believe in all this psychic mumbo-jumbo crap. But I'm at a complete dead end. I'm willing to try anything to get a new lead, a direction to take this case."

A NIGHT OWL REVIEWS BOOK REVIEW
Theresa Crawford has not led an easy life. Years ago she lost her innocence to three guys that gave her no choice. Now she must suffer the consequence in never being able to be loved by a man. She always thought Max Lamoreaux would be her man but everything changed because of that incident year ago. The only one who knows her pain and heartache is Remy, his brother. Now when Max needs her she knows he will always consider her as a freak. Sometimes she hates her gift then other times she welcomes it in knowing that there can be joy with her talent. Yet the case Max is working on pulls her in all directions. Her heart knows it cannot go through heartache but she must deal with it. Can she help Max in this case or will it be another failure?
Max Lamoreaux knows that this case is sensitive to him for someone has taken his godson away from his parents. Everybody says he just needs time to cool. Yet Max knows it is much more than that story. He never knew how unique Theresa Crawford was until he almost lost her during a vision. His brother, Remy, told him repeatedly that Theresa has a reason for her talents and to bide her time. Yet knowing that his godson’s kidnapper is out there makes him believe time is running out. Not only does he have time running out for him but he knows that Theresa is important to him right now. Can he get past her talent and show her love is possible between them?
This is the first I have read from Kathy Ivan and it won’t be the last. Desperate Choices had it all including suspense, betrayal, passion and secrets that come out at last. The love that Theresa has for Max is strong and knowing that her talent is about to come out just makes it stronger. The villain that Kathy Ivan creates is unusual yet in a way even the villain has their own story to come through. It was fast paced and never dragged making it easy to read and enjoyable. Great job.
Bitten By Books Review - 4.5
Theresa Crawford is a psychic whether she wants to be or not. A traumatic event in her past triggered her ability to feel things when she touches objects or people. It’s a talent her ex-boyfriend, Max Lamoreaux, desperately needs her to use. He doesn’t believe in that sort of mumbo jumbo but he’s willing to try anything to find his godson, Tommy.
Max isn’t the only one forced to make a desperate choice. The book is told from multiple points-of-view, letting the reader see things through the eyes of the “bad guy” as well as the good guys. We get to see why the “villain” made the choices he did, and even though they aren’t necessarily sane, they came from a good place—well, until the end, but in the interest of not giving spoilers, I’ll leave it at that.
Desperate Choices by Kathy Ivan is one of the reasons my respect for Carina Press has grown so large. It’s short – not a novella, but definitely not novel length – but packs all the punch of a full book. Theresa and Max go through all the motions of a difficult relationship without making any of those infamous fictitious leaps. The paranormal aspects took a backseat to Max’s struggle with Theresa’s ability and her struggle with her violent past. Very well done!
Joyfully Reviewed -- A Joyfully Recommended Read
Theresa Crawford hates being psychic. In fact, until recently she tried to pretend the ability didn’t exist. But when Max Lamoreaux came and asked her for help in finding his godson, she couldn’t refuse. Theresa and Max had briefly dated a year ago but things never worked out. Now Max wants a second chance with Theresa. Can Theresa help Max find his missing godson? And can each of them face their past in order to have a future together?
Kathy Ivan is a new author to me but I will absolutely be looking for more from her in the future. If I get really lucky she’ll write a story for Max’s brother Remy! Max and Theresa are both characters that make you anxiously want them to have their happy ending while the suspense adds just the right amount of angst to keep you turning the pages. I highly recommend Desperate Choices. Readers can’t go wrong here!
