Excerpt

Prologue
Echoes of footsteps on wooden stairs reached the hall where Samuel waited patiently. He had rushed his journey all the way from the mainland. I hate this cursed place he thought as he looked around at the blandness of the room how did my brother ever settle for this?
The servant Matthew reappeared at the base of the staircase, panting from all the running up and down.
“The master will see you now sir”
“Pfft… still alive then eh…?”
“Yes sir, but he weakens by each breath… you must prepare yourself.”
I have been prepared for many a year now. Samuel’s older brother John had been born ten years before him, when he had come of age; he had given up all his rights to the family fortune to follow some lunatic to an island, to study with him, to write for him. Even now his family still scorned him for turning his back on them; he had even refused to leave the island when their father had passed away.
Samuel remembered how he had travelled here after their father’s death out of sheer anger at his brother, by camel then by boat, past thieves and pirates, all in the aim of revenge. Finally brother you shall have a chance to explain your actions to our father, he would kill you for the second time if such a thing were possible.
He got up from his seat and stood at the bottom of the steps and looked upwards, he had not been allowed to see his brother the last time, why now? Why does he wish to see me now? Why did he send a messenger to get me?
“How many steps is it?” he groaned.
“Fifty sir.”
Samuel ascended the stairs at a pace befitting an overweight man; at the top he was greeted by a large wooden door that was in some disrepair. He pushed it and it swung open; inside was a large circular shaped room with a single window, a fire burned under the chimney, with the bed near to it. Samuel could see a hand rise to issue him closer, it’s been thirty years since I last saw the fool’s face.
Samuel walked to the edge of the bed and sat by his brother’s side; John looked familiar, yet he had little or no hair and wrinkles covered his face, but even still the essence of the fool’s face lingered.
“Sam… it is good to finally see you,” said John softly.
“…and you brother,” he replied, plain faced.
“I sent for you… so I could look upon your face one last time…” said John, but the words made Samuel shift uneasily.
“…and… I wanted to see with my eyes what kind of man you have become.”
“I am what father wished me to be, unlike you brother.”
“Useless… all useless… if I had a fortune… do you think that I could take it with me this day… I die?” asked John, Samuel refused to answer only looking back in silence.
“I need to ask you a favour…” sighed John.
“A favour? Pfft… you’re lucky I came at all, all I want is to witness the day that you go to our father to answer for what you have done,” he raged.
“I see that you still hate me… I see that you are not to be trusted with such a task as I would have asked… your heart has become twisted into-,” John paused and broke into a round of coughing.
Samuel stood up and walked to the window and looked out, this window faces towards the east, towards home. Maybe I shouldn’t be so foolish, John learnt off one of the most talked about people ever to exist; maybe he has some treasure, or some secret knowledge to pass on, knowledge of how to become powerful, how to conquer and control the world around me. Samuel returned to the edge of the bed and spoke in a calmer tone.
“What is the favour that you ask…? I will try.”
John squinted his eyes and examined his brother, examined his motives as if he could see into his very soul, then he reached up and pulled a rope to summon his servant Matthew.
“Listen carefully Sam, my brother, my kin, a time is coming when great turmoil shall inherit the earth… but one shall rise… and at that moment, he will need to hear my words… I need to ensure that he receives my words…” said John.
“Anything brother.”
The door burst open and in pounced the servant seeking his master’s instructions.
“Bring me parchment, ink…” commanded John. His weakening body was evident for all to see. Matthew obeyed and then helped his master to sit up in the bed.
“Wait outside… both of you,” demanded John.
The two moved beyond the wooden door and closed it behind them, they waited to be summoned.
“Matthew… tell me… did John’s master teach him much knowledge? Or secrets?” whispered Samuel.
“Everything sir.”
“Everything??… pfft… how can any one single person know everything… you’re as much a fool as my brother.”
Then a rumbling began, enough to make the two of them reach for the wall to steady themselves, it was followed by a bright light that issued out from the edges of the door forcing them to cover their eyes, then as quickly as it had come, it was gone.
The two burst back into the room, John was keeled over and the ink was spilt. Matthew went to his master’s lifeless body and settled him back into the bed, and closed his eyes.
“Get out of the way you fool,” yelled Samuel, pushing the servant out of the way.
“Where is it?” he asked as he searched his brother’s body, but he could not find what he was looking for, his rage turned back onto the servant, he grabbed him and shook him.
“Where is it!?” he roared at the servant, sure enough the ink was there and spilt, but the parchment was gone.

Sixteen year old Jordan Fitzpatrick is a boy who dreams. Not ordinary dreams, but extraordinary dreams. Images of dragons flourish in Jordan’s nightmares, visions of school, death and sometimes destruction. But Jordan is also besieged by a terrible need to save something. He dreams of a shadow people and of mysteries. In school, he learns in Religious Studies how to meditate, to understand dreams and OBE – out of body experiences. But when his brother is in the hospital, Jordan has the strangest dream of all. His brother’s spirit introduces him to Lavender Shop – where Jordan discovers a scroll that is somehow connected to him. Now Jordan is on a mission to find his destiny and understand his foreboding dreams that are guiding him. A book about understanding dreams will help lead him through the journey. The more Jordan unravels his future premonitions, the more the past races up to catch him.

The Boy Who Dreams" is a well-written book with interesting characters, dialogue and a vibrant setting. The writer has a wonderful way of describing Jordan’s surroundings and bringing to life the boy's intense dreams and nightmares. Jordan is as likable as they come, struggling with his brother’s untimely death and also the average teen issues of fitting in at school and even bullying. The setting of the story is also enhanced by pictures throughout the book. Cesar has written a well-rounded novel full of mystery and intrigue that most age groups can read and enjoy. A remarkable read filled with adventure.
