A would-be P. I. solves two murders.

Five years ago, a mother went missing; three years later, that mother’s nine year old daughter, Tyra, was strangled in her bed, and the father was convicted for her murder and is soon to be executed. Claire Peterson is the great-grandmother of Tyra. She is an elderly woman who is dying, and she is also the next-door neighbor of the Mayors.

Its Christmas time and Tom Mayor has just played a joke on his eight-six year old mother, Lill. Lill loves watching detective movies from the ‘40’s, especially the Thin Man movies, which Tom had purchased for her the previous Christmas. She’s watched them so often that Tom knows them by heart. Knowing that she quickly forgets the endings of these movies, Tom, who hasn’t worked in years,--he hates working—told his mother that he was going into the detective business, that he knew he had what it takes to be a detective. To prove this to her, he told her that before the Thin Man movie that they were watching was over, he would tell her who the killer was. This he did and his mother was quite impressed. She told him that she hoped that he’d pursue it. He told her he would; adding that getting your first client would be the hardest part. Tom thought all of this was funny, but it backfires on him.

The next morning, his mother comes rushing into the house, stating excitedly: “Tom, Claire wants you to find out who really murdered Tyra!” Not wanting to be caught telling a lie, again, Tom reluctantly takes the case. After much frustration; after much failure; after peeing in his pants from fear; after being shot at, and after facing death, Tom solves the case—in Thin Man style.

“I’m No P. I.” can be purchased in print through Post Mortem Press for $12.00. It can also be purchased through Kindle and Nook for $3.99.
