A tender bedtime story about a common housefly who thought he was a bee. Follow the adventures of Little Wing as he discovers who, where, and what he really is!
By chance, a common housefly, Little Wing, is born in Butterfly Forest. His mother arrived there riding in a car. Once there, she laid her eggs and left. After hatching, Little Wing finds himself completely alone, his brothers and sisters were taken away by an army of red ants. He doesn’t know Who he is, Where he is, or What he is. The story is about how he finds answers to these questions.
Along the way, Little Wing makes new friends, like Lou, a caterpillar; and Bob, a bumblebee. He barely escapes the ruses of a spider and a strenuous chase by some birds, but at the end he finds out what he is, and discovers that Lou has turned into a beautiful Monarch butterfly and then they both ride on a cloud going eastwards towards the rainbow.
Excerpt
— “Can’t you fly?” Asked Little Wing a bit puzzled.
— “No, I can’t. I can’t even walk. Wherever I go, I have to crawl. I have to pull my weight with great effort. It takes me forever to go from one leaf to another. The truth is,” said Lou gravely, “that I have to drag myself around.”
— “It seems to me that you don’t like it.”
— “You’re right; I don’t like it at all. But, you know something? When I have a dream, I dream that one of these days I will be able to fly. That, somehow, I will get a pair of big beautiful wings and that I will go towards the sky and fly directly into the rainbow. And that once there, I will bathe in blue, and green, and red, and yellow. I also dream that I will ride on the clouds, and that one day I will make me a nest in one of them. For there, I will find love. True love, with understanding and friendship. So, whenever I feel tired of dragging myself, I remember my dream and, somehow, my weight seems lighter, and I feel happy, and I smile.”
