A romantic adventure set against the background of World War 1.

By the time Ross Calvert discovers Harry Martin is in fact Harriet Martin she has fallen in love with him. Realizing she has failed in her final effort to protect her shell-shocked brother, she puts a desperate proposition to Ross. Marry her and she will give him an heir.
Ross accepts. However, he is tormented by the betrayal of his former fiancée Virginia. On his honeymoon he meets her again and is still infatuated. With the army recalling him to the trenches of France, he faces a terrible dilemma. Taste Virginia’s passion before he marches off to war, or keep his marriage vows to Harry.
Set against the background of World War 1. Harriet (Harry) Martin’s brother Gilbert, a wounded soldier, is released from hospital. They both need to obtain employment as Harry lost her job after being beaten up by a sadistic housekeeper.

She masquerades as a boy in a desperate attempt to gain employment at Devil’s Ridge, Ross Calvert’s isolated farm.

Ross, a wounded Gallipoli veteran himself, employs Gilbert as a stockman and his kid brother Harry as a cook.

After his fiancée, the beautiful Virginia, deserts him when he returns from the war scarred, Ross vows never to let another woman into his life.

Harry thrives on the danger of never knowing whether Ross might discover her deception. To her shock and despair, she finds herself falling in love with him.

Ross is strangely drawn to the rebellious fiery Harry, and despises himself. He is not a man drawn to boys.

When Gilbert’s agony and anguish become too much, he kills himself.

After Gilbert’s death, Ross discovers Harry’s true identity. She puts a desperate proposition to him in the hope she can stay at Devil’s Ridge. He marries her, she gives him an heir.

As the dark clouds of war intensify in Europe, he is recalled to the army. He marries Harry, and on their honeymoon, meets Virginia again. Finding himself still obsessed with her, a terrible dilemma faces him. Does he break his marriage vows and betray Harry, so he might taste the passion Virginia is now offering him?

Virginia is now married to a ruthless millionaire, Clive Bromley, who wants Devil’s Ridge. After Ross sails for France, Bromley plots Harry’s downfall and she is arrested for being a German spy.

She is sent to prison, and from behind bars must fight to prove her innocence.

I love historical novels and this was one of the best. I am impressed that Mrs. Tanner does research, like Bernard Cornwell (one of my very favorites!) and I really learned some things about WWI Australia. It made me think a bit about my own maternal grandparents, though American, and their experiences in the War. I really loved Harry's spunk, compassion, joy and growth. I could have really kicked Ross, if I'd had him near from time to time! Harry's understanding of him helped me to like him as well. Many walks of life were well portrayed and the interactions between them was seemingly honest. I had tasks I HAD to do today, but had to continually get back to this story to see it to it's conclusion. I was not disappointed and rather cheered at the end, not trying to give anything away, but I'm sure that you'll like the story too. I purchased Margaret Tanner's book, Frontier Wife, just a few minutes ago and see a future of reading more of her work!

Wonderful Historical Romance
5 out of 5 stars Wonderful historical romance, May 22, 2012
By S.A. Martin "romance book lover" (Miami, Fl) - See all my reviewsThis review is from: Daring Masquerade (Kindle Edition)
In all honesty, I must say that "Daring Masquerade" by Margaret Tanner is one of the best historical novels I've ever read. Well-written and researched, it is a beautiful love story between Harriet and Ross. Harriet, nicknamed Harry, is a spunky heroine whose sassy talk often gets her in trouble. After she quits her job as a maid, she and her brother, who lost a hand in a World War I batle, obtain jobs on an Australian cattle station, owned by handsome but disillusioned Ross Calvert. Fearing she wouldn't be hired unless the owner thought she was male, she poses as a young boy. Soon enough, Ross discovers her gender. This is a love story of Harriet and Ross, a story that takes the reader from high society in Melbourne, to the trenches in France. The reader sees the Australian countryside in all seasons and gets the feel of the war and its effects on the soldiers who are slaughtered in senseless battles. This is a great panorama, a story not to be missed.
