From a former teacher and grandmother of ten, help stop whining in a fun way! Frequently it helps for children to be read fun-stories that illustrate the unpleasantness of bad behavior and ways to correct it. For instance, sometimes children don’t understand how annoying the sound of whining can be. "Peter and the Whimper-Whineys" by Sherrill S. Cannon is a story of a little rabbit who does nothing but whine. This rhyming book should be read with alternating normal voice and whining voice, according to the character speaking. Children learn that Whimper-Whineyland is not a fun place to be, not just for all the whining and crying that goes on but for all the other bad behavior and unpleasant character traits exemplified!!! A group of preschoolers left my latest book-reading session chanting, “no more whining, no more crying!”
Excerpt
In a house in the forest all covered with vines
Lived a very small rabbit who did nothing but whine.
He'd whine and he'd cry from morning till night,
And nothing that anyone did would be right.
He'd cry and he'd whine, and he'd whine and he'd cry,
Till his mother said, "Peter, I want you to try
To stop all that whining and unpleasant noise.
Go take a nap, or go play with your toys;
If you can't stop that whining, I very much fear
That the old Whimper Whineys will look for you here.
You'll go live with them in a land far away,
Where you'll join them in whining and crying all day."

KidLitWriter - Review
The Kalparta illustrators did a wonderful job capturing the look of the whimper-whineys, their home deep in the woods, and Peter's home, which drastically contrasted the whiner's home. Ms. Cannon again writes in rhyme. The words will easily roll off a reader's tongue and sound whimsical to those listening. This is a good book for classrooms in schools and those in homes. There is not a word of preaching or moralizing. Kids will get the message in an easy and fun way, a way which will help them remember the message and apply what they have learned. Ms. Cannon is a retired teacher. All those years of reading stories to her students might have helped be the wonderful writer she is today.
Beachbound Books Review
Peter and the Whimper-Whineys by Sherrill Cannon uses lively rhyming text to communicate to children that whining and crying are unpleasant behaviors that no one wants to be around. Children also learn that when they don't whine the day is brighter for everyone including themselves.
"In a house in the forest all covered with vines, lived a very small rabbit who did nothing but whine." Peter's mother tells him that he mustn't whine or the Whimper-Whineys will take him away to a place where he can whine and cry all day. Unaffected Peter goes right on whining. Finally, his mother sends him to his room where her predictions come true and Peter is visited by the Whimper-Whineys. Will Peter learn not to whine or will he live forever in the land of Whimper-Whineys?
Sherrill Cannon is an accomplished author with a gift for rhyme. Peter and the Whimper-Whineys is a story to cherish and the lesson it instills is timeless.
