Karen, Iris, and Adelia wade in adventures on the sunny, breezy Caribbean island of Cozumel, Mexico, all the while getting a great tan and having a few margaritas!

Karen Weaver stared desolately at the pale blue sea beyond the hotel bar's window and sipped a Diet Coke. Four days in the sun on Cozumel had tanned her skin and lightened her hair. Of course, she knew that wasn't too healthy for her skin or her hair, but when had she done what was good for her, she asked herself. Her breathing and heartbeat had calmed down over the last half hour. It was her turn next to tell her story to Officer Fernandez. He was nearly through questioning her friend, Iris.
This group of five women and a man were waiting for word about the private jet that was going to take them all back to Houston along with Miles. Poor Miles didn't fit into the "friend" category. And presently they weren't even sure if he was dead or not. In Mexico, one should never have an accident.
"Poor Miles," Karen sighed. "Senor, un vaso con hielo, por favor."
The bartender brought Karen a glass of ice and she poured her cola over it.
Frank, the lone male in the group raised his eyebrows but said nothing. He seemed drained of energy; his shoulders slumped over the bar. He, too, stared out to sea and waited.
Karen interrupted the silence.
"Are you getting bored with me already?" she asked, slipping an arm around his shoulders. "You're so quiet."
"I could describe you the same way. What happened to the spark in this group?" he said in a low voice. His smile showed her he deeply understood the irony of his own question.
Karen smiled back.
"Well, we aren't bored. It has been an eventful trip. You know, girls go on vacation, girls meet handsome men from Austin, girls' boss shows up and drowns unexpectedly. It does give one something to reflect upon, don't you think?"
"I suppose it does," he admitted.
The phone at the bar rang then and the bartender, Enrique, answered it.
"Weech off you ees Adeeleuh?" Enrique asked.
Karen's traveling companion, Adelia, listlessly reached for the phone and everyone watched her while she listened to the caller.
"It's probably Rudy himself," Iris speculated aloud to the rest. "He'd want to handle getting Miles back to Houston himself. Of course, he would expect Adelia to help from this end."
"It's always amazed me that the owners of the company you three work for would expect you to be as involved with the "family members" as you all call them," observed Victoria, Adelia's sister.
"No kidding," Julianne added. "So much for a ‘professional distance’ between employer and employees."
Karen shook her head, still intent on drinking in the last of her view of the Caribbean Sea. She hadn't worked too many places except Sapphire Oil, the company under discussion, but everyone employed there took for granted that the "family members" expected, often needed, extra help that they could not get privately. She thought back to when this trip was only in its planning stages. She knew only her part in the story, not Miles' version nor how nor why he'd showed up in her life at this time. But if he lived, Karen did know she had a tool to negotiate a future for herself and her little boy.
Mentally, she retraced the events from last Thursday night until now.

Fantastic Renny! When are you posting more??? Or - better yet - send me the manuscript! ;) I love a good mystery - especially when it's set in my most favorite place in the world! Well done!
