Amazon Winddreamer: Book Six of the WindLegends Saga
He would have flung himself over the edge had not one of the Outer Kingdom warriors--those never seen, shadowy creatures who were never far from his back--made a grab for his legs. As it was, he screamed that one word over and over as men began to pour into the cavern, their faces blanching white at his wild, keening screams of denial. He struggled to free himself of first the Outer Kingdom warrior's hold, then Shalu's, then Sentian's.
He didn't feel Thom's hard hands gripping him, as well. He didn't hear their words. His own mind was filled with the piteous screams coming from his own mouth. "You can have the gods-be- damned power!" he yelled. "I don't want it; I never wanted it! Just give her back to me!"
His only answer was the crashing thunder of the Maelstrom.
"No! Don't take her away from me again!" he begged, violently struggling against his men. "Not again! Sweet Alel, please!" He bucked in their hold. "Please!"
He spat.
He twisted.
He snarled and cursed.
He fought like a demon from the Abyss.
"Liza! Come back! Don't leave me!"
He began to convulse with his agony.
"Brelan!"
Mindless in his grief, he clawed at the edge of the Maelstrom, his fingernails shearing away as he grappled to gain purchase on the stone. Blood sprayed from the ravaged tips, but still he clawed. He shrieked as Thom and Sentian grabbed his wrists and pulled his hands free.
"Let go of me!" he screamed, bucking in their grasps. Tears streamed down his ashen cheeks and his hair blew wildly in the force from the Maelstrom's wind. "Let me go to her!"
"Conar, no," Shalu said firmly, reaching out to take the young man's chin in a firm grip. "You can not help them now."
Conar's lips drew back in a fiendish snarl and his sapphire eyes turned crimson. "Let me go to my woman!"
"No," Shalu said, shaking his head. He spread his large hand over Conar's scarred left cheek and caressed it gently. "Your lady is gone, son. She is lost to you. A Daughter has returned to the Sea."
From long ago a scene rushed up to spread before his wild eyes. The moldy smell of Norus Keep, the colors of the coverlet on the bed in which Liza lay, the texture of her silken hair as he stroked it came back to him as though it was happening at that very moment.
She clung to him in her nightmarish sleep, her body pressed tightly to his. Her hands clawed frantically at his shoulders and she gasped for air as though she was drowning. "Conar! Help us! He can't hold me much longer! The ledge is going to give way!"
"I am here, Beloved. You are safe, now!" he told her.
She wakened to stare at him. "Conar?"
"I am here, Sweeting," he said and kissed her.
