5.0 out of 5 stars The Phoenix Rising from the Ashes 22 Jan 2014
By Robin Hislop
The Phoenix Rising from the Ashes is a new anthology of sonnets published by Friesen Press.Canada. The poets who have contributed to it have come from many different countries and backgrounds, some with well known names others relatively unknown. The main language is in English but several other languages are taken into account together with translations and there is a special section of only French sonnets, which are not translated as Canada is a bi lingual country. The poetry has many themes and styles mostly devoted to the sonnet form with a few exceptions. All in all, it is an original and imaginative project and promises very interesting reading for poetry lovers.
5.0 out of 5 stars A Very Good Read 18 Mar 2014

Considering how difficult it must have been to pull of such a varied and extended collection of sonnets, the book is a success. Granted some of the poems are better than others - but that is true in any poetry book. I normally judge poetry books by what the proportion of good poems in them is. In this book, the proportion is quite high and iI shall chip into here and there for many years to come. I expect most readers of poetry would find this book to be an excellent book to read bit by bit over a period of time - making each few pages a real banquet.
5.0 out of 5 stars An Important New Anthology For Sonnet Lovers... 10 Mar 2014

My copy of The Phoenix Rising from the Ashes arrived last week and already I have bookmarked many favourite sonnets from this fascinating anthology.
Editor-in-Chief Richard Vallance has compiled a very rich, eclectic mix of both traditional and modern sonnets from all over the world; in English, French, Spanish, German, Chinese and Persian; along with some beautiful illustrations and detailed annotations.
It is very important that we read the work living sonnetteers, as well as those from centuries ago. Many publishers are a closed shop when it comes to new poetry; they dislike taking risks with unknown writers in a genre such as poetry; which is so often sidelined by more mainstream topics such as cookery or popular fiction. Modern sonnetteers, such as The Potato of Terror, have a lot to offer in terms of zany humour and original thought. How fortunate then, that the Potato's work is represented in this anthology; also more serious poets such as Robin Ouzman Hislop, Esther Cameron, Sara Russell Richard Vallance and more.
I absolutely love this book. Every time I open it there is new wit and wisdom to discover. A must for poetry lovers everywhere... T Russell, Sussex, UK
