Conner Wolfe is once again the one left behind. Every time tragedy or death strikes, it should be him, but it’s always the other. After losing his partner in a bust that went bad, Conner decides he must return to Ireland and face his past. He needs to find out what really happened when his brother’s life was taken so he can figure out his destiny.

Once he’s in Ireland, he runs into Di O’Dea. She is everything any man could want in a woman. He thinks he’s falling in love with her, but he fights it every step of the way. After all, he should be dead…after all, he’s scarred on his face…after all, nobody could ever love one such as him.

Di O’Dea has been waiting many years for Connor Wolfe’s return. She met him once as a child before he went to the States. She knows he’s her destiny, but how can she convince him of the same thing??

The Dark Shield is another wonderful addition for bookshelves everywhere. Conner & Di’s story is like so many of our own. They are both held back by pieces from their pasts—their "baggage" may overwhelm them and keep them from future happiness. I thought the beginning moved a little slowly and I couldn’t see where the background information was taking the story. However, once we hit the soil in Ireland, things started to fall into place and the story really took off. By the end of the book, I couldn’t put it down and felt compelled to read it to the end.

I don’t want to do anything to give the ending away on this one, but I will say I was surprised at first by the lack of mention of the Druid history and faith. Having read Ms. St.James’ prior book, I knew she is very knowledgeable about the Druids. However, it all does come into play at the end of the story and you won’t even believe how things turn out. I’m still rereading pieces because it was so fast moving and fascinating.

I think Conner and Di’s story will appeal to people of all ages and backgrounds. The way they are carrying the past with them and how they work through it to move forward in life is a lesson all of us should learn. Until we can let go of the past, we can’t embrace the future. Enjoy!
