We have all experienced a moment in our lives when we didn’t want something to change: school commencement, someone to leave us, or a day to never end.

Imagine a caterpillar not wanting to become a butterfly. In “The Caterpillar that Wouldn’t Change”, when another caterpillar, Franny, informs Nelle they must turn into butterflies, Nelle resists the change. When Franny reappears as a beautiful monarch butterfly she motivates her feeble friend with a single phrase. Once a butterfly, Nellie realizes that change is often better than expected.

Nancy Mure´ has done such a wonderful job in telling a story that speaks as much to adults as it does to children. Too often, we get stuck in our comfort zone, where fear takes over and we become trapped, afraid of change and growing. And so, our fear of failure prevents us from enjoying thrilling adventures and new experiences. Nancy simply and eloquently reminds us that when we open our eyes to possibility and have a true desire to grow and change we can overcome our fear, call upon our inner strength, evolve and realize our full potential. Learning these lessons as a child makes our adult life that much easier.

Who wants to change? No one, at first. Nancy S. Mure´ faced the challenge by writing her first children’s picture book, The Caterpillar That Wouldn’t Change, about that theme. The beautifully illustrated book, by Kezia Terracciano, allows children to see what has to happen within a person if the change is going to happen willfully. You have to wanna change. And Mure´ allows her character Nelle, the caterpillar, to disobey and refuse to change. Mure’s book does not contain the age-old adage that change is good for you. Instead, she creates a positive reason for change, not forced. This allows children the freedom to choose and thus see their change through their own eyes, rather than a continued situation of parental obedience. I recommend this book to all children and especially their parents!

- Dr. Mara Bollettieri, Psy. D.
This is an engaging story of two caterpillars that face some of the greatest challenges for children growing up and changing. The messages of believing in yourself and supporting a friend were integrated into a sweet and enjoyable story that addresses feelings and friendship.
