Notes for Teachers
It is probably advisable to give the pupils just one set of questions and their model answers at any one time. The following method has produced good GCSE results for many years. The students may want to word process their work to make eventual correction of mistakes easier.
1. First, make sure students understand all of the German on the sheets. They could be encouraged to write on the sheets – jot down their own ideas, extra vocabulary and what these words mean.
2. In the personal topic sheets they should then be encouraged to give their own answers. Where words and phrases are in brackets, the students should put in their own words or phrases. Sometimes they will be the same as the ones on the sheet.
3. Students should be made aware of which questions are open ended ones and encouraged to give at least three details in their answers. These types of questions can be identified by the amount of detail in the model answers.
4. Sometimes, model answers have been left out. This is because previous answers have already covered that answer. This is something which can also happen in the exam. A student may give a very full answer, which helps them to “take over” the exam. However, they should avoid making long speeches.
5. Check the student’s answers.
6. Once the student has made a good version of their own answers, they should be encouraged to learn them of by heart. Testing could be built into lesson plans. Students may also be taught how to sound natural.
7. Students may have further practice by listening to these questions and answers on a tape. The German assistant could help them to make a tape, customised to their own answers.
8. Some of the role play topics include “extra” sections. These are aimed at the Higher exam.
9. Students should be further encouraged to practise both in and out of school with another pupil.
10. The role play sheets are very appropriate for self-testing. Again, it may be useful for students to work in pairs on this.
11. The personal answers sheets will also form a good foundation for writing tasks and discussion of grammatical points.
