It is four AM on a Sunday in early September. As I lay here slowly greeting another new day with hope and anticipation, my mind wanders aimlessly into the future, something that I have been doing a lot more since I turned sixty.
The message is clear. Not a bolt of lightning nor a vision, not a flash of light, but a quiet nudging that speaks to my soul. Thus, this book is born.
It is the story of life – my life, your life or the life of a total stranger sitting next to you on the airplane. It is not fact nor fiction, not reality or possibility, not drama or a documentary. It is just a story, one person’s journey through life with all its adventure and drama, struggles and accomplishments, hopes and dreams and it is a story I am sure you will relate to if you choose to see your life as a wonderful experience filled with your personal mixture and share of adversity and joy, failure and success, happiness and sadness and wonder and uncertainty.
Although I have not lived yet through all of the stages covered in this book I am well beyond the half way mark. What I bring to you is over sixty years of personal life experience and the knowledge and awareness I have gained from others who have reached the final stage
Regardless of what you bring to this book or take from it, it will change your life in some way, whether minor or significant. I guarantee that when you finish the last page that you will never again look at your life the same.
The gift of another new day, regardless of what it brings to you or the circumstances that you bring to it, will be viewed with awe and gratitude.
There are ten chapters that will follow your life journey from the day of your birth to the day of your physical death and spiritual re-birth. This story is about someone you may never meet but their questions, experiences and challenges will resonate in your mind and heart as you pass from one day and one year to the next.
This is not a religious book. Some may choose to call it a spiritual book. Many may decide it is an inspirational story that helped them create a new vision for their remaining days on Earth.
However you choose to interpret this story and its message, please keep in mind that it is sent to you with love and a prayer that you too will discover the true purpose and meaning of your life and your ultimate destiny while you are still here.
Please keep in mind that although the chapters are designated in ten year segments, with each segment having a particular topic focus, that in each life segment one or more of the other life topics can be represented. For example you could be in your twenties, The Growing Years, and still be defining some of your values from, The Defining Years. Or, you could be in The Challenging Years and experiencing some of the issues in The Questioning Years.
Every life has its share of disappointment and happiness, struggle and success, stress and peace, fun and boredom, failure and achievement, loneliness and satisfaction and drama and joy. What distinguishes the value and contribution of a person’s life is not what circumstances or situations that they face but the attitudes, values, beliefs and expectations they bring to these. As you read through the various life periods please keep in mind that there is no such thing as a ideal life no matter how you choose to define ideal.
Each of us must make choices at every stage of our life. These choices will determine ultimately the quality of our life. So I would caution you to make each of your choices carefully and with your eye both on the present and the future.
Let us begin this short yet powerful journey - your life.
“Man does not simply exist, but always decides what his existence will be, what he will become in the next moment.”
