Written as a standalone, Unwilling Killer is the first of a series featuring two little old ladies whose new passion is solving unsolved murders. Because of their advanced ages, they "recruit" a niece of one of the ladies, Jessica, a 31 year old school teacher who's on summer vacation.
In Unwilling Killers, Jessica is searching for clues to the murderer of a wealthy industrialist in Galveston. To get these clues, she enters the late owner's palatial mansion, which was mysteriously inherited by the housekeeper. Mrs. Gertrude Johnson, the housekeeper has fallen on hard times and in order to pay the back taxes on the valuable property, has decided to rent out rooms. Unfortunately for Jessica, she herself, is her only border.
Although Jessica feels someone watching her as she enters, she attributes it to nerves. Unknown to her, however, two men hiding the attic, watching her arrive, decide they have to kill her.
Filled with secret passageways, killers, a supposed rapist, a secretive, reclusive housekeeper, a good cop gone bad, all hell soon breaks loose, with Jessica caught right in the middle.
Prologue: From their hiding place in the attic, the two men watched from a narrow window as the little blonde got out of the cab. Judging by the nuerous suitcases the driver was depositing beside her, it was clear the little lady planned to stay awhile.
"Dammit! We're nearly finished with this job! We can't risk blowing it!"
"I agree. It's either her or us." Brent looked at her in the hidden camera he'd installed under the eaves of the porch. "It's a damn shame though! She's so young. But I'll kill her tonight. Quickly. After she goes to bed. She'll never know what hit her."
