And still the soulbinder cast no curse, but snatched up her knife instead. She uttered a fearful scream and flung the blade at Allyso. Then all the world went mad.
The soulbinder screamed again, a high thin shriek of terror, and Allyso saw her shredded away like leaves in a gale. The tree grew taller still, towering towards the stars, spreading like a canopy overhead. A sizzle of lightning raced across the sky, thunder rolled and the trees crown broke with a crack. It fell to earth in a long, shuddering crunch that shook the ground, throwing Allyso down so hard that the breath was driven from her lungs.
The blade sang on through the air.
