OK. The ball is coming in from the pitcher to the catcher as the batter chooses not to swing. Actually, he is trying to block the view of the catcher from third base because the runner there is attempting to steal home on a play well known as the suicide squeeze. The catcher must look at the incoming pitch and the steamroller simultaneously, knowing the batter must step out of the way. He is not an inexperienced fellow, but on this occasion, his brain locks into numb obstinance trying to switch views. He frames his mitt to catch the ball but, distracted by the impending train, fails to close the glove in time and the ball bounces out, landing on home plate.
