Excerpt

"Although Sonny didn't trust the two-leggers since his run-in with the hook, he did enjoy watching them. Their ability to breathe out of water fascinated him. He was amused by their odd antics, like tossing round objects back and forth for no reason, running with nothing chasing them, not to mention their attempts at swimming. Like a fish on a bike, he thought."

St. Petersburg Times
Hooked on fiction: Brahm Piterski and Paul Piterski are the St. Petersburg authors of a children's book, Like a Fish on a Bike. Sonny, a fish who spends the night with his tail fin kicking up silt, a sure sign that something is troubling him, is the main character. What has caught him by surprise is a child's dirt bike that sinks into the lake he calls home. A fish mesmerized by handlebar streamers summons the youth in readers of all ages. Bite-sized scenes will hold a child's attention. Sonny bulking up to get in shape for a bike ride is comical for adults. Lessons on life and language ripple through this fast-paced read.

This charming story of Sonny the fish touches on environmentalism while focusing on one individual's struggle to recognize his own strengths. When a bike is dropped into Sonny's lake, he becomes obsessed with it. An older fish dismisses it as "more pollution," but Sonny wants to ride it. When he discovers he is not strong enough to push it, he begins a program of muscle building, which is not successful. Only when the bike is pulled out of the water by the lake custodian does Sonny begin to list his strengths (swimming backwards and sideways) and accept that he was not made to ride a bike. The story is accented by expressive watercolors and includes footnoted definitions of some more difficult words. Reviewed by Karen Porter

Sonny the fish can remember before two-leggers began showing up at his lake on a regular basis. But he has always been amused by the antics of the two-leggers, especially their attempts at swimming. "Like a Fish on a Bike," he always said. But when a bicycle is thrown into the lake where he lives, his life is suddenly changed. Maybe a fish could ride a bike. Like a Fish on a Bike is a charming story with a lot of learning packed into a small package. Sonny has to learn to accept his world again. There are small lessons about ecology, pollution, even vocabulary. The watercolor illustrations are lovely, and sure to please children and adults alike. by Susan Short
