Enchanta (50,000 words) is an imaginative young adult fantasy novel for children eight to thirteen that adults could also enjoy. The story has lots of magic, adventure and surprises.
Enchanta is part of a trilogy that also includes the novels Pot of Gold and Space Bugs, Earth Invasion. Brother and sister David and Barbara Morgan are flown away from their southern New Jersey home by a magnificent white Pegasus. Wings transports the young adventurers to Enchanta, where the kids must help an old wizard Wisher, who had lost his wonderful wishing powers after an earthquake had struck his formerly peaceful kingdom. A new barbaric race, the Beneathians has emerged from the center of the world and the savages have captured Wisher's wife, Queen Hope. Without Hope, poor Wisher is confused and has lost confidence in his great mental powers. Barbara and David must locate Wisher's three magical but immature sons, Changer, Pretender and Inventor. Then after reuniting the three young magicians with their wizard father, the six crusaders conduct a daring raid into Beneathia to rescue Queen Hope. The savages are soundly defeated in a series of very amusing battles. Then, after Enchanta is magically reconstructed, David and Barbara are magically transported back to New Jersey. Excerpt
One of the Beneathian guards turned around and was very surprised to spot the brazen invaders. "Quick Changer," David commanded, "turn into a dragon."
"What's a dragon?" Changer asked in a very flustered voice. "What does one look like?"
"Never mind that," David replied. "Turn into a rhinoceros instead."
The hostile Beneathian guards came running and shouting toward the six raiders with swords and spears being held over their heads. Seven reinforcements rushed into action behind them, and they were screaming their lungs and tonsils out.
Changer obediently converted into a fierce-looking rhinoceros. The nine Beneathian warriors halted, awed by the ferocious animal that was snorting and scraping its right front foot against the lit cavern's solid gold floor.
The nine uncivil brutes evaluated their options. They quickly turned around and fled in a hasty retreat. Inventor assumed his classic thinking pose and caused fires to ignite the clothing of the fleeing barbarians. Flames and smoke shot-out from furry garments that covered the backs and posteriors of the shouting savages.
