JONATHAN TURNED THE KEY in a lock made stubborn by disuse, shouldering open the tower door. A wave of stale, musty air rolled out to welcome him, making him cough.
He felt as if an eternity had passed since he had allowed himself any reminder of Karen, locking away her things in a superstitious attempt to banish her memory. Now he hesitated in the doorway like a nervous bridegroom. The past caressed him as if the intervening five years had been nothing but a long, drawn-out nightmare from which he was finally awakening.
How could I ever have thought I could forget? She was the one bright light in my life. When she left me the sun went out. But life must go on…mustn't it? That's what they tell me. So here goes.
Steeling himself, he took a wary step over the tower threshold.
Whispers of her voice echoed in the corners of the cluttered room. He closed his eyes and listened to the memories.
“Jonathan, is it really ours? All ours!” Her proprietary squeal when she first saw the tower had been as excited as a little girl's, and he so puffed with pride to be able to deliver it to her.
Dust covered her paintings and playthings in a silken shroud trimmed by the delicate tracery of spider lace.
“Oh, I want the tower all for my own. What a wonderful studio! Don't you think so, darling? I will let you bring me tea on Sundays.”

This was one of those I-want-to-keep-reading books. Each light horror short story is unique with unexpected twists. The very talented author has provided the reader with easy to read, enthralling stories about compelling characters.
Read one and you're hooked. For instance, the first tale about a young man who has lost his true love. I followed along offering him pity for his lost and then... Well, you'll find out. I thoroughly enjoyed it. And the fun tale of the rather fearful waitress whose car won't start and she allows herself to be escorted home by a strange young man.
The author creates worlds where nothing is as it seems. Beware reading these stories when you're home alone in a house that talks to itself after dark. You might find yourself looking out windows, listening, wondering...
I highly recommend this book to any lover of light horror or mystery or just plain good reading. I hope to see more of this author's work. Soon???

The Eternal Night
What we have in this anthology is a set of nine stories taking in Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror. We have ghosts, vampires, androids, reincarnation, paranoia and 'The Caretaker'.
It's 'The Caretaker' I like. He runs a shop in a Manhattan sidestreet where objects can be bought. Objects that may not be exactly as they seem. It's a wonderful twist on the old curios shop. The author has set up the shop, 'The Caretaker' and the objects to lead into little morality plays that can have either good or bad conclusions. Hopefully there will be more of these tales.
The story mentioned title in the book's title is a gentle tale of love between a female vampire and an aging servant. The writing in the tale evoking honest emotion in the characters not merely reporting it. Similarly in Steel Velvet, the story of a man and a female android he creates, and modifies continually throughout his life.
These tales are not groundbreaking, they do not stretch the reader exploring new ideas of technology, nor do they bring forth images of complete horror. But as a reader I do not want every book/story I read to be taxing. Every now and again I like a comfortable read and that's what books like this are for, as we get nine well crafted, easy to read, feel-good stories.
These are good stories, from an author who's yet to disappoint. The only thing I found when reaching the end of the book is that I wanted more.

| Sounds good, appears very well-written. When I have some time for pleasure reading, I will pick it up. |
