When we reached the house, it was 11:30. The light from the kitchen fell against the snowdrifts in the front yard and it sparkled.
"Welcome to our small abode, Mother." I bowed and held the front door open for her. The smell of the freshly baked pumpkin pies lingered in the air, adding spice to our yuletide spirit. Valerie rushed ahead of us to her bedroom.
"You have your tree decorated in old-fashioned ornaments this year."
"Valerie's idea; she wanted an old-fashioned Christmas."
I eased Mom's coat from her shoulders and hung it in the hall closet.
"You still have the angel?" She noticed the Christmas angel she had given me on the coffee table.
"Yes, I put her out every year. She always reminds me of the time we trudged through the snow for a Christmas tree on my birthday. Remember when we started decorating it and found a nest hidden in the branches?"
"Yes, I remember. There were four white eggs with little blue speckles, close to hatching. Something must have happened to the mother bird earlier that year. You took the eggs from the nest and replaced them with Easter candy eggs."
"Do you remember what you told me, Mom? You said, 'It's a gift from God. A reminder that all things, great and small, renew themselves. Life goes on, because nothing ever really dies'."
