River is ten & white, her mother habitually leaves her and her siblings with Ivan, a black man. Ivan walks in to find one of mom's men friends making a pass at River and breaks his nose. They leave Oklahoma in a rush, become squatters in Owls Nest, Iowa. The school bully delights in taunting River with 'white nigger. Buy a copy, read what happens next.

Race relations in 1970s America proved to be a bitter struggle, but the topic makes for a classic novel in Beverly J. Scott’s White Nigger: A Tale of Bigots & Bullies.

Ten-year-old River is a white girl whose half-brother and sister were possibly fathered by a black man named Ivan. Her mother has not been home for over three weeks, when a man accosts River. Ivan comes to her rescue, but is afraid for the family’s safety, and packs all three children into his old truck. They end up in Owls Nest, Iowa, where they find a deserted cabin and become squatters. After Ivan assumes the role of River’s father, the school bully begins to taunt her with the words White Nigger.

Though life is not easy and River continues to face prejudice, this insightful story reaches into the core of humanity to show that the color of our skin does not define who we truly are. You will be deeply touched by the characters and theme of A Tale of Bigots & Bullies.

Reader Reviews for "White Nigger"

I think the title captures racial prejudice and a sad story. I definitely think this should be a movie. Good luck with your story and the many issues surrounding prejudice. I for one can't wait to read it!

Obviously, the title was meant to grab the attention of the prospective reader; all I felt was sadness. When I read the blurb, I decided not to read the story for its content because of the content. At a time when there is so much racial conflict in our country, is it really necessary to recall the struggles of the past? I'm sure you're a good writer - but maybe you should concentrate on a less incendiary subject. Good luck to you.

Really, is that a necessary book title? It doesn't matter the context there is no reason to be racially offensive, just to get noticed. That's absolutely disgusting.
