Conundrum

Lindsay Parker expected an exciting new life when she moved to teach art in Paris. The excitement, however, prove to be more than she had bargained for. A Picasso is stolen from the art school. Two previously unknown Cézannes turn up in a junk shop. One of her new friends is kidnapped and another is murdered. Is Lindsay next?

Paris, Montmartre, the Left Bank, a prestigious art school, a strange nightclub - all are a bit overwhelming for Lindsay Parker when she first arrives in Paris to teach art. She is bowled over by the handsome, brilliant, gifted and mysterious Alain Bordeaux, and before she knows it is madly in love with him.

But what is Alain's connection to a rash of art thefts - not to mention kidnapping and murder? Is Lindsay safe with him? And what about all the unknown Impressionist paintings that are suddenly turning up?

Can Lindsay trust Alain? Can both of them trust those around them? Depending on love alone, they investigate together - and learn some things they'd rather not.

Excerpt
The apartment had been ransacked. Sofa cushions had been ripped apart; drawers had been pulled out and their contents scattered.

"Good God, they got the Renoir!" Lindsay heard the pain in Alain's voice.

On the floor lay Lindsay's watercolor - crumpled, pulled from the rame. In a daze she walked over and examined the mess on the floor.

"They got it, Alain," she sobbed. "The portrait of Victorine. Oh, Alain, it's gone, it's gone . . .

Professional Reviews

PORTRAIT OF VICTORINE
American Lindsay Parker finds a stroke of luck when she lands a job teaching art in Paris. The city is exciting, the art world thrilling, and there are two handsome men, Mark McGovern and Alain Bordeaux, who are available and attentive.
Life loses its rosy glow when Mark disappears without a trace. Next, a Picasso is stolen from the art school and two unknown Cézannes appear in a junk store. Things turn gruesome when an elderly woman is attacked at the art school and another person is murdered.
With Alain at her side, Lindsay tries to make sense of it all. He claims to be one of the good guys, but is he? Lindsay investigates further, finding herself pitted against an international conspiracy and a mystery that has its roots with a woman who committed an act of bravery in the opening days of WWI.
Although the savvy reader will know who can and can’t be trusted, PORTRAIT OF VICTORINE is an enjoyable read with enough danger and passion to satisfy even the most tried-and-true fans. (Jun., 254 pp., $13.95)

Reader Reviews for "Portrait of Victorine"

Reviewed by Amy Coffin 12/22/2002
[PORTRAIT OF VICTORINE] is the product of a unique idea and a fun setting. . . fun to read . . . the fast pace creates much excitement within the novel. It's apparent that Devlin has spent significant time in Paris tracing Lindsay's fictitious steps. Readers race through city streets as well as the French countryside. It's a nice armchair traveling experience.
