On a deserted mountain top in the Rockies two men are beaten, shot and left for dead. Feeling smug and secure in their success, the assailants head back home to Philadelphia, eager to reap the rewards for the efforts. But their plan develops a critical flaw. One of their victims survives.
Wings ePress
Marnie Grant, a lonely, insecure physiotherapist at Calgary’s Foothills Hospital gradually develops an attachment to the nameless victim who was found beaten and bloodied on a mountainside.
With no memories of his past, and no family to claim him, Marnie takes it upon herself to care for him.
She dubs him Luke and is charmed by his innocence and wide-eyed wonder as he rediscovers the world around him. Eventually she becomes his teacher and mentor, and Luke begins to show her the depth of her beauty. But even as Marnie struggles to help Luke adjust and remember, his enemies stalk him. And Luke and Marnie never guess the dangers and unsavory truths that await them both as they seek to fill the void that is his past.
Excerpt
He no longer felt the blows.
But he had felt the bullet. There was no mistaking the pain as the 9-mm shell pierced his gut, forcing him down to the bed of the truck and rendering him impotent and defenseless.
He had remained defenseless as he watched them destroy the only thing that he had ever truly loved without reservation or doubt. Part of him died in that moment. Perhaps the best part. And then they came to finish the job.
They dragged him to the ground, took up their weapons and vented their rage and their frustration. They rained their blows on his head, his shoulders, his back, his legs--nothing was immune to their evil. Evil.
He had always suspected as much, but now he knew for certain. They were evil. Both of them. Goddamn them. He should hate them. He should but he didn't. Perhaps it was the looming specter of death that put it all into perspective. Hate was futile now. It served no purpose. Or perhaps it was the knowledge that, in truth, he was no better. He had more than his share of evil staining his soul. He had glimpsed it and seen its destructive force in his life. But, like a fool, he had refused to acknowledge it--had refused to purge it. There had always been time.
But time had just run out.

Of murder and betrayal
Erin Fox really knows her characters. This novel of murder and betrayal offers a mystery of the survivor's identity. While several clues are offered, don't expect them to help, because they can go either way, keeping the mystery intact through most of the story. The two Philadelphia police officers who unofficially get involved in the case give strong support to the mystery. While Pete Gruber is anxious to get to the bottom of things and find his missing partner, his current partner, Kyle, has a knack for subtly defusing tension with occasional humor. Ms Fox adds descriptions of her Canadian homeland as backdrop to quieter moments in the story.
Beyond Innocence is well written, and intriguing in style. Trying to figure out who the survivor is will keep you involved in the events. Even when Luke's identity is finally revealed, you'll want to finish the story to see how he deals with matters. Beyond Innocence is a definite page turner and a showcase for Ms Fox's writing talent.

A heinous attack on two men leaves one dead and the other with a battered body and mind. With no memories, no name, this man is brought back to health and fitness by
physiotherapist Marnie Grant. She calls him Luke. Through Luke’s journey from “innocence” to manhood, we share in his delight in a beautiful Canadian sunset, his “first” taste of ice cream, his
“through the eyes of a child” questions and ideas on right and wrong. And, we never forget his tatoos or wedding ring as he and Marnie fall in love.
Emotional and spiritual maturation comes not only to Luke during his time in Calgary. Marnie, who always considered herself plain and unassuming, and believed she could never live up to her family’s expectations of her, blossoms in her relationship with Luke.
As delightful as this love story is, it is the coinciding tale taking place in Philadelphia’s seamier side that truly captivated me. There, while the police search for Luke and the other murdered man, we meet the most despicable characters as the mystery twists and turns. There in
the netherworld of drugs and prostitution, Ms. Fox shines as a storyteller. From the worldly old detective and his new young partner, to the tough yet sensitive child of the streets and his coke-
head mother, there isn’t a character in this story who doesn’t hold your interest and keep those pages flipping.
I can’t wait to read Ms. Fox’s next book.

| Erin Fox writes in the tradition of Lisa Gardner, Tami Hoag, and Catherine Coulter. She's one to watch, if this is her first book. I couldn't put it down! |

| More twists and turns than a Rocky Mountain Pass. Real people, real lives -- but what lives! Non-stop action and suspense, with generous dollops of passion and romance. A stay-up-all-night-'cause-you-just-have-to-finish-it kind of read. |
