Ashore on a remote Brazilian beach to bury his dead crewman, a sea captain finds a small boy, alone and near death. He takes the boy to his New England home and adopts him as his son. Unknowingly, the captain has also brought home an ancient spirit whose sole purpose is to protect the boy at all costs. The child is the key to a conflict that will determine the destiny of mankind.
Captain Edger was not concerned with the schooner captain’s death. He now knew the man was telling the truth and they would have to suffice with whatever supplies they could find aboard. If she was in good enough shape, perhaps they would keep her too. The boy was no longer of any use to them and he turned to the Mundurucú who had been set on killing the lad, “Finish him!”
Slightly fearful but glad to have a chance to end the life of the last Onu, the Mundurucú stepped forward and knelt beside Jason. He hauled out a small knife and grabbed Jason’s hair when a movement in the sky caught his eye. Like a monstrous waterfall, a thick, weaving black mass was flowing from the nearby shore toward the ship. The Mundurucú’s eyes widened in terror and he dropped his knife.
