Surviving the horrors of war during his long tour of duty in Vietnam, Doug Heaton believes nothing in the world can ever frighten him again, at least he thinks so until he begins to see strange fleeting shapes from the corner of his eye, shapes that mysteriously blink out of sight into the darkness when he turns to look at them.
It isn’t until he meets Randy Clark, who has also been seeing these spectral shapes, that he learns they are spirits of the dead, lost souls condemned to roam the earth forever until God forgives them. However when he and Randy team up with a lady friend and begin to investigate they suddenly find themselves perilously involved in the world of dead spirits and demons and find their own souls in mortal peril.
Sitting quietly in the convertible parked in the darkness beside the highway, Randy watches from the corner of his eye as a young woman suddenly appears at the railing of the highway over-pass. For a brief moment, and in the faint light of a near by lamp post, he sees the figure hesitate, then, like a slow motion movie, she climbs the railing and throws herself to the highway below, her body striking the pavement and crumbling onto it like a rag doll. Seconds later her body is crushed under the huge wheels of an on-coming ten-wheeler that never even stops. Mysteriously now the highway becomes empty and an ominous silence fills the air as the spiritual specter of the woman arises from the body and stands staring down at the crumpled heap on the pavement. Suddenly the silence is shattered by the crackling sound of static electricity and the odor of sulfur fills the air when another specter appears. This time it's a huge, black, humanoid reeking with evil, the odor of it causing Randy to slouch deeper into the Convertible's seat. Stricken with terror now and unable to move, he can only watch as the enormous figure moves to the specter of the young women still standing over her crumpled body, and when she glances up and sees the thing approaching her, it’s arms moving to express whatever it is saying, her hand goes to her mouth and she back away her other hand flailing out before her as if to ward it off. In the next instant the specter of the women, along with the crumbled mass before her, blinks out of existence and for a few seconds longer the dark horror stares at the place she stood. Then to Randy’s complete horror the thing turns to him and for the first time he sees its coal red eyes. Eyes that blaze with a deep angry fire within as it slowly lifts its huge arm to point a long black finger at him in accusation before it also blinks out of existence.
