The shocking news of an air force maritime patrol plane suddenly disappearing from the radar screens when other unidentified aircraft are in the vicinity begins the hunt for what becomes known as "the Vultures." From the beginning, McTavish's tale of intrigue in the air is a compelling read.....A.K. Cross, author of "Highball for Victory."

Lieutenant-Colonel Douglas Mark White, a fighter squadron commander stationed on Vancouver Island, analyzes evidence surrounding the crash of an Arcturus maritime patrol plane; he concludes that the aircraft was shot down by a hostile fighter. Aggressively, Doug pushes for authorities to investigate the incident. Subsequently, large-scale air activity in Canadian air space is detected involving unregistered jet transports and fighters. The armed aircraft are marked with the insignia of the United States Air Force.

Doug attempts to solve the mystery despite the resistance of the Wing Commander, the seeming disinterest of authorities at higher HQ, and a lack of resources. Accidental damage to his eyes, which places his position as a flyer and squadron commander in jeopardy, complicates his quest. Ultimately, he discovers that there is a large-scale drug-smuggling operation flying from Mexico and Columbia to a fake USAF air base in British Columbia.

Doug, despite eyesight difficulties and self-doubt related to the death of a squadron pilot, struggles to defeat the smugglers. His fight to destroy the "Vultures" culminates in an air battle and a personal clash for survival with their detestable leader.

Professional Reviews

Spell-binding Adventure
I have had the privilege of reading Shield's first novel before its release in February 2002 and I can assure you it's a spell-binder. Vultures In The Sky is an action adventure story with elements of a good detective novel. The author has woven a tale worthy of Horatio Hornblower and Sherlock Holmes combined. McTavish's fast-paced story begins with mystery when an air force patrol plane suddenly disappears from the radar screens. The tension builds as efforts are made to find an unidentified aircraft seen in the area at the same time of the incident. Shield's leading character, Lt.-Col. Doug White, a fighter squadron commander, finds much more than he bargained for when he begins his investigation. Little does he know that his own life will become the target of a sophisticated enemy. Vultures In The Sky is worthy of anyone who loves fast-paced excitment, fighting against the odds, and flights into the unknown. It's a keeper. I'm looking forward to more adventure sagas from this skillful writer. A.K. Cross, author of 'HIGHBALL FOR VICTORY.'
