Better Than Sleep
My choice from more than thirty years of work, including early poems from "Reluctant Rebel" (1975), the dream-like (nightmarish?) semi-autobiographical "Sweeney Jim" (1983), the complete poem-sequence "Better Than Sleep" (1985), the Jesus Bhakti Poems (1997) and "Fin de Millennium" (1999), along with my latest collection "DRINKING-UP TIME", with the long poems "US AND THEM" and "NAKED ON DARTMOOR"
We may no longer gather rosebuds:
Listen - midst the ash and bone
Limp red roses whisper tales
Of rosebuds dead and gone.
The flies drone on then stop. The silence
Fills with heat and sun and smells.
A fly moves. In the silence
I think I hear St Osyth's bells
Ring out across the empty marsh
Green and grey, the cold grey sea
Washing the foaming sand, a gull
Call - call - call - to me.
