Open your mind and heart to discover your ideal state of balance, what gets in the way of this, and how to let go of unhealthy stress reactions and the underlying motives and payoffs for these.
We can begin to create more balance in our lives by simply setting our intention. The next step involves moving beyond any blocks to having our ideal balance. These blocks often include our automatic reactions, which become patterns over time. We all have our favorites, which we learned as coping mechanisms growing up. We were smart little kids and discovered very early on which reactions got our needs met. For some it was yelling and screaming, for others pouting and whimpering, and for some, the silent treatment worked best. Whichever method we employed, it may have worked fine for us as children, but as adults it is having a boomerang effect. It no more helps us to create balance in our life than closing our eyes while driving helps us to get to our destination. The problem is we’ve been responding this way for so long it has created deep neural pathways in our brain so slipping into these habits is as comfortable as putting on our favorite pair of slippers, only it’s even less conscious. If we want to shift these reactions into healthier responses, we need to turn off the automatic pilot switch and notice what we’re doing.
