only you could. In our current economic environment, for most people, resigning is
simply not an option.
However, that does not mean you have to accept unacceptable behavior. Slavery
is not legal in most countries. You have the right to be treated with fairness and respect.
Working for someone does not give him or her carte blanche to attack you personally.
A famous Far Side cartoon by Gary Larson pokes fun at the bad boss dilemma by

If we’re suffering from a bad boss situation, our burning question might be: is
there hope? Fortunately, the answer is absolutely yes! Unfortunately, an effective and
adequate resolution will not happen overnight by learning some cute tricks or gimmicks.
This eBook is not a “get rich quick” scheme. It does not offer a magical pair of slippers
that lets us click our heels a few times and suddenly be transported to a world where our
boss loves us unconditionally and wants to give us a big raise. This book is, however, a
combination of expert wisdom and proven exercises that can, if we are willing to do our
part, improve our working relationships and allow us to have a more enjoyable,
rewarding, morally right, and productive work life.
Most experts and authors who write or talk about this topic focus outwardly and
mostly on the boss. They often recommend external actions that include ways to change,
control, cure, manage, manipulate, or “work” our boss. These approaches assume that
such feats of magic are actually possible. In addition to being ethically wrong, they
provide only temporary Band - Aid fixes to a Bad Boss situation.
Authors or well - meaning colleagues may advise other “gray” tactics to protect
yourself and “get on your boss’s good side” by agreeing to their demands, trying to bond
with them in some way, or faking an interest in something they like, such as golf. In other
words, pretend you’re their buddy by lying to them or just “sucking it up and dealing
with it.” They might even throw the word “wimp” into that sentence. Deceiving your
boss is unethical and carries risks not worth taking. Allowing your boss to violate
respectful and appropriate boundaries, hinder your career, or use you as a doormat is also
not the right answer.
Some may suggest finding better ways to vent your frustrations, attain more
balance in your life, or talk things out with a shrink. These suggestions may be good steps
in the right direction, but if that’s all you do, then it’s akin to getting a par on the first hole
of the golf course and heading back to the pro shop.
Several books and articles suggest ways to “operate” your boss by using a few
clever approaches, techniques, phrases, or tactics to manipulate situations to your
advantage and “get what you want.” Rather than focus on core personality traits and
profiles, these approaches label different bosses by their behaviors, such as “tyrannical,”
“irrational,” or “bully,” etc. As we’ll soon discover, bosses with decidedly different
Neuron Personality Profiles often exhibit similar behaviors. Although using a cute
technique for a “bully boss” might work for a short time, it will not solve your problems
long term and may even make matters worse. Bosses are in charge not because they’re
stupid, even though they may act that way now and then. Most bosses are smart and
usually see right through your attempts to manipulate them or your work situations.
One recent article goes so far as to suggest that workers “act enthusiastic, even if
you’re not” and “take acting lessons” to “build confidence.” This advice may provide
temporary surface level help; however, projecting false fronts is not a good idea. Unless
you plan on becoming an Academy Award–winning actor (in which case you don’t need
your current job), bosses and peers will eventually strip away your mask to reveal the
truth underneath.
In short, these approaches tackle bad boss issues from the outside rather than the
inside. They prescribe painting over problems rather than building new foundations upon
which a more reasonable, objective, right, fulfilled, happy, and successful house can
be built.
