Review by Nancy Lindley-Gauthier, author of
This frank, first person account is a fast-paced mystery. The main character is realistic, strong, and easy to identify with. If you have ever cringed and thought, "I would Never Do That!" about a main character - you recognize what a joy it is to meet a main character that behaves logically, has strong opinions, and does exactly what you think you would when confronted with specific situations.
The straightforward narration of the main character, Madigan O'Malley is fast paced, frank , and often funny!
Upon meeting a particularly stunning example of manliness, she reports, "Honestly, I have never swooned in my life, nor have I said the word swooned, until I laid eyes on him." Her quick mind, commentary, and strong personality make this a hoot to read.
The mystery kicks off with a lot of questions and one exceptional bequest... Madigan's initial decision is logical, careful and lands her in intrigue right from the start. From the excitement of the inheritance, one is lead to the terror of a threat that seems arbitrary, and into the very credible main character's efforts to cope. The setting is particularly charming - a northern New Hampshire resort. Through in a bit of suspense, a cast of well-defined characters, a bit of suspense, and a couple of fun-loving dogs, what else could one need?
Mohican Lake, by Maura Clegg is a well-constructed mystery, and the puzzles the main character must sort through are sure to please the most discerning mystery readers. The realistic, straightforward account draws the reader in, especially with the main character's credible reaction to various circumstances. This is at times suspenseful, and overall a fun, fast read.

I had the pleasure of reviewing Mohican Lake, a mystery written by Maura Clegg. From the first page, I knew I was in for a treat. Maura tells the story through the main character, Madigan O’Malley, a spirited 26 year old girl who lives in the pool house of her wealthy parents.
Madigan receives a letter from a lawyer’s office and right away she lets you know her opinion of lawyers. The letter informs her that an aunt whom she has never met has passed on and named her sole beneficiary of a lakeside resort in New Hampshire, The Masterful Mohican. Of course Madigan is wary but she ventures forth to Lake Mohican and discovers a grand resort she immediately falls in love with. She realizes that The Masterful Mohican is her ticket out of her snobby, overbearing mother’s home and that finally she has a worthwhile goal in life. But, someone does not want her there. Madigan’s life is threatened and there is danger at every turn, yet she also finds protection and love in the living – and the not-so-living.
Maura has created some very interesting characters in this book and has painted a picture of a beautiful resort that I can only dream of making reservations at. I grew to love Madigan, her father, and even the lawyer but the jury is still out regarding her mother!
I enjoyed reading Maura’s book and recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good mystery with a bit of humor mixed in.
