The recently widowed Marissa Porch learns what the paranormal world holds us accountable for.
From faeries to fables, Marissa Porch gets a crash course in the paranormal in Sandy Lender's "Desecrated Ring." Keith Publications offers this short fantasy horror story as part of their 2010 Halloween line, available initially only at the KP site's D'Ink Well line.
As it leapt for her, all four limbs extended, Marissa’s heart started beating again. She stepped to the side, curling the curtain panel around her as if to protect herself from claws and shattering glass. The sound of the window breaking in thousands of pieces rang in her ears, but not as loudly as Cassie’s scream in the other part of the house.
“Cass!” she shrieked, pushing against the curtain that now bound her.
The beast before her shook its furry head, flinging spittle and blood every which way, but Marissa saw nothing beyond the dark, suffocating cotton and wool blend. She expelled pitiful cries of frustration as she struggled to escape her fabric prison.
There was no point in trying to be quiet; the beast mere feet from her knew exactly where she was.
