She remembered seeing the fear in Brian's eyes. She screamed; then everything went black. When she woke, Katherine Stewart was lying in a hospital bed. She had a splitting headache and her right arm and shoulder were in excruciating pain. Kate touched her head with her left hand and felt a bandage on her forehead. She looked at her right arm, which was heavily bandaged and in a sling. As Kate surveyed the room, she noticed her mother asleep in the chair next to her bed. "Mom," she asked, "what time is it? Where am I?"
Mary Scott, startled by her daughter's voice, sat up in the chair. "Kate, you're awake," she observed. "It's around midnight and you're in the hospital."
"What happened?"
"You don't remember?'
"No."
"You were in a really bad accident."
"Where's Brian?"
"Let me go find Ellie and your father," Mary said quickly and hurried from the room before Kate could say anymore. Mary had heard Kate's final question, but as she hurried down the hall, her thoughts began to plague her. How do you tell your own daughter such horrible news? At the nurses' station, Mary asked the nurse, "Would you please have Dr. Turner paged? My daughter is awake."
