Drawing on 40 years experience in alternative lifestyles and remote RV travel, the author attempts to shed light onto why he and so many others have opted out of mid-life suburbia to take up a life of fulltime wandering. While Bill claims no direct involvement in the Buddhist faith, at times he provides an almost mystical insight into nomadic lifestyle issues, such as the burden of materialism, the responsibilities of freedom, and the 'Zen' of travel expenses. This new consciousness, he argues, offers an essential philosophical framework upon which to develop a sustainable gypsy lifestyle -- a way of life for which he happily assumes the role of ‘quiet messiah’.

This 68-page e-book is available only in Adobe PDF format (1.6MB).

How to buy

Excerpt (from the Foreword):

I have attempted in these pages to provide, not only an insight into the life of full-time ‘roadies’, but also some enlightenment on the ethos that motivates the true wanderer; a philosophy of sorts upon which many base their decision-making -- or perhaps to help rationalise the adoption of such a lifestyle for yourself. After all, if Mr. Robert M. Pirsig could find Zen in the nuts and bolts of a motorcycle, seekers of the ‘Freedom Road’ should have little trouble in their own quest for cosmic illumination!

Mind you, my thoughts and beliefs on nomadic lifestyles aren’t entirely my own. Considering the extensive reading I’ve undertaken over the years it stands to reason that the thinking and opinions of like-minded writers would, in time, guide my own emerging Zen. Some of their ‘flashes of insight’ are sprinkled like lotus blossoms throughout my text to help channel and mold your own thoughts and understanding. Do with these as you will.

In addition, I should also point out what my subject matter is not: It is not about caravanning; it is not about tourism; it is not about ‘grey nomads’; and it is definitely not about the iconic ‘around Australia’ trip -- although these and related sub-topics do have a part to play as a framework for my thesis. After all, they are elements of my life; they are, in part, what I do while I’m ‘bumming around’.

Inevitably then, you will discover useful amounts of practical information here also, although I have intentionally avoided delving too deeply into the nitty-gritty of nomadic travel. Should the reader seek to venture beyond their ‘reasons why’ and learn more of the ‘how-to’ of life on the road, I invite him or her to refer to my current listing of eBooks located at http://www.authorsden.com/adstorage/61102/EbookCatalogue2009.pdf.
