This rhyming picture book for preschoolers is about safety in the home. Explorer Sam is saved from disaster by his mother's quick answer,"No Sam" and her suggestions to help him. Children enjoy joining in with the answer to "What do you think his mother said?" asyou read to them.

In this picture book, we see Sam narrowly avoiding problems as he explores his surroundings on a wet day when he has to stay indoors. It is fun to share with any small child as they soon catch on to the many times, Mom has to say 'No'. The colourful  illustrations by Ann Ducharme give the children good picture clues about the various situations.

Below is an excerpt from this book which has no more than 3 or 4 lines on each colourful page,

Excerpt

Sam found bottles under the sink.
One pretty liquid looked like a drink. He'd almost taken off the top
when Mom rushed in,saying "STOP!"
What else do you think she said?

(next page)
"No,no that'll make you sick.
It's poison. Give it to me. Quick.
Now we'll find something else to do."

Jane Buttery has just brought out a book about safety in the home through a story about Explorer Sam, a toddler of about 2 1/2-3years old. Through a bouncy rhyming text, she tells how Sam is protected by his mother from doing himself damage. The story was written to be told aloud and allow children to join in to answer,"What did his mother say?" I found it fun to read to my youngster.
