Imre’s book is titled From the Rill to the Ocean subtitled My Journey to Freedom. He was born in Hungary in 1941.The village of his birth, Sivó, ruined during WWII and later relocated to the flood plane of a little creek in a segregated area of Gordisa, vanished without a trace - and forever. The people of his village called themselves “Bəásh.” They were known to most Hungarians as Gypsies. In Hungary, di scriminated against as a minority, Imre Kalanyos was disheartened. Disappointed by the Communist system’s failure to integrate his community into Hungarian society, Imre, at age twenty-six, decided to leave his country in hope to reach the free world - the big saint Ocean. Because it was illegal to leave the country, his escape from Hungary was demanding and dangerous. On one hand, if caught during the planning stage of his escape, he would have faced imprisonment and would have been black- listed for life. On the other hand, if caught during his escape, he could have been killed. Aware of this but encouraged by Ady Endre’s poem From the Rill to the Ocean, Imre told himself “LIVE FREE OR DIE.” Feeling like he was squeezed between a rock and a hard place, Imre took a leap of faith and courage. In his book, he recounts his encouraging story with eloquent prose and includes moving works of poetry from Shakespeare, Ady Endre and even himself. His story is sometime heartwarming, sometimes heartbreaking, but always truly inspiring. It is a well-told testament that reminds us that freedom is always worth dying for. Read more of his fascinating and perilous journey by purchasing a copy of From the Rill to the Ocean online at Xlibris.com or at a local book retailer near you. Imre now lives in Chapel Hill North Carolina, where he shares and enjoys freedom with his dear wife Kathy and their freedom- loving dogs, Jesse and Buddy.
