In the school of life and love, what choices would you make?

Set on the campus of Freedom University, a historically black college in Memphis, Tennessee, the lives and choices of four women are interchanged. Lena, the wealthy socialite daughter of Freedom’s prestigious alums and girlfriend to NBA-bound superstar, Brandon is introduced to the colorful lesbian lifestyle via her roommate, Denise, the smooth, reserved women’s basketball champion. Once bitten, twice shy, Denise’s choices are grades, game and graduating Freedom until sexual tensions make it impossible to ignore her roommate’s curiosity. Playa of another flava, Cooley sparks the curiosity of Freedom’s college coeds, as she leads them across the sexual orientation line to the

rainbow coalition. How will the choices of her past, affect the love of her future? And what about Carmen whose most drastic external change challenges her same old internal feelings of insecurity? Will she make the same old choices that moved her to change in the first place?
“Denise, no!” Lena grabbed Denise and pulled her out to the middle of the dance floor. She put her arms around Denise. “Calm down, dance with me.” Denise was fuming, Lena stared into her eyes, and she could see the anger dying.
“I’m sorry you had to see that,” Denise said to Lena.
“Don’t worry about it.” Lena grabbed Denise’s arms and pulled them around her waist. They began to dance to the music. “Thank you,” Lena whispered into Denise’s ear, their eyes met.
Suddenly there was no one else in the room. Denise couldn’t stop staring at Lena. She was the most beautiful woman she had ever seen. Her heart began to race; she felt butterflies in her stomach. The smell of Creed, Lena’s favorite perfume, was exciting all of Denise’s senses. She had to do it. She no longer cared that Lena was straight, she no longer cared about Brandon. She had to kiss her. Denise leaned in to place a sensual kiss on Lena. Suddenly, she felt Lena pulling on her.
"Dee they just called us on the mic to the front door."

Choices, the debut novel by newcomer Skyy, is an excellent read. It depicts raw, honest and real lifestyles, emotions and friendships between four young ladies in their early twenties coping with day-to-day decision regarding their orientation, secret desires and family. The story, set on a collage campus, is so authentic you feel as if you are part of the campus. The characters are realistic, three dimensional and at times irrational but you find lovable qualities in all of them. The plot, action and conflicts are well thought out and fluid. The intimate scenes are placed appropriately and enhance rather than inundate the plot, which allows the story to emerge and dominate. My only analytical observation is the delivery of dialogue, the pacing and climactic peak techniques, all of which will surely become more refined the more this author writes and develops her style and execution.

Skyy has created a work that has depth not only from her characters standpoint but also from lessons learned, experienced resolutions and subtle messages of encouragement and self appreciation throughout the story. For a first time author, this works has merit in its genre and shows a talent that will only get better with time and experience. I definitely look forward to reading more from this author.
