Aubade, means "Morning Song" in Spanish I think. Whatever these 3 piano solo pieces were composed just after I returned from NewYorkCity around 1986 and was living in what was then still a small, quiet Southern town, filled with the Sunday morning sounds of distant church bells, and an old town clock that musically chimed variations of a melody every half hour.

Description: 3 piano solo pieces from a larger piece: "Autumn Tints" (1986) titles:

1. Aubade: The Belltower of Old DeLand (October)

2. Nocturne: Walking in the Moonlight (November)

3. Song Without Words: (September)

Impressionistic piano compositions by American composer Michael A. Guy, of recital caliber, moderate difficulty. The largest piece No.1 titled: Aubade: The Belltower of Deland contains a mix of classical, jazz and rock techniques evoking images of a Sunday in a small Southern town, from early morning to late evening. This piece is based in the beginning on the exact melody that the old Clock in the old County seat building used to chime (now torn down), including the variations it often played on the half hours and different hours of the day. Additionally "old Deland" circa pre-2000 used to have an over 100year Belltower at Stetson University in the town's center which was torn down around 2005. Music students when this composer was in residence (ca. 1979) used to be assigned duty to chime the bells on festive school events or on weekends, holidays. Usually it was an organ or keyboard major as it was layed out like a keyboard but involved very physical labor in reaching the ropes and wooden handles at the top of tower to be able to play a tune in proper rhythm. In fact I heard it was quite athletic. Those music students often played their own improvisations on the bells as well after playing a familiar tune. I never got to do it, but my music here attempts to picture those memories in sound of what I heard as a student long ago.
It's a fine piece full of pianistic challenges that requires a disciplined but not rigid pianist. Towards the close of the piece, the piano attempts to imitate a rock band that was often heard on Sundays in the evening on the wind; then the part becomes the Gershwin like blues/jazz improvs of then piano student, Michael Guy. . No.2 & 3 are a November Nocturne mostly for Right Hand patterns. The last piece is titled, "September Song" a country/folk tune similar to George Winston's early pieces, improvisation encouraged. Large note font using Finale Allegro notation. 18 pages.
