Date with Destiny

She was out of control. Like a racing train, brakes gone, rocketing down a steep hill. Except that she was not in a train, she was in a Mercedes convertible, flashy red and fast.

As she stomped the gas pedal, she glanced at the Zoppini stainless steel watch on her wrist. Minutes were passing; minutes she couldn’t afford. A horn blared. She looked up just in time to avoid a large SUV. Its driver saluted her with an upraised finger and angry shouts.

“Oh, God” she implored as the sleek red car shot ahead like a bullet fired from a powerful gun. “I can’t be late. They won’t take me and I can’t go like this. I’ve wanted this job all my life and I have to look my best.” Self- consciously she raised a hand to the red silk scarf she had tied around her head to prevent her hair from blowing in the windstorm created by the convertible. She risked a quick peek in the rear view mirror to make certain it was still tied securely.

The blare of another horn brought her eyes back to the road. This time she barely missed sideswiping a truck. It had to swerve to avoid her; the red-faced driver fought to bring it under control. A beefy arm exited the window in another one-finger salute.

“Almost there,” she breathed. The building was in sight now; its elegant blue awning edged in white was just ahead. On the other side of the awning was the parking garage. She would just make it.

“Oh bother, I need the pass card.” She released the wheel with her right hand and felt inside her handbag trying to find the card. “Ah, there it is.” She momentarily looked down to make certain she held the correct card. As her fingers closed around it the world went black.

The headlines read:

Newly Elected Police Commissioner Dies in High Speed Automobile Accident

The story went on to say that, according to information given by her secretary, the unfortunate woman was on her way to a salon appointment and that her swearing in ceremony was to have been held later that same day.
