Fourteen-year-old Julianna 'Jules' Forrest used to be a normal girl. She used to be worried about the midterms at her first year of high school. She used to be shy and keep to herself – But, 'used to' are the key words in those sentences – That was before she learned she could talk to animals. Now she's a Listener, and worse yet, now she's running for her life! But there may be help – Jules' Speaker is a young falcon named Falco, and he thinks there might be others. Now, Jules will have to find the others, and soon, because one of their own, a renegade Listener, is chasing them down and killing each member!

Excerpt

“Falco, are we anywhere near where we need to be?” I asked.
“Yes, miss Jules. Go around the back of that building there.” He gestured with a wing to the building that faced the water. “Just around that corner and down about three feet is the sewer exit.”
Oh yeah, the sewers. I had completely forgotten, what with the whole running for my life thing and all. But at least the dark and nasty sewers didn't seem quite as bad now.
We had to keep moving. Falco's words from earlier kept me alert. He could be coming back. And I didn't want to be anywhere he could get to me when he did. So I quickly breathed a deep breath and went around the back of the building. Sure enough, three feet down on a small ledge a large tunnel protruded from the rock cliff and a steady, but slow, trail of sludge rolled out of it in to the river. I almost gagged knowing that I had swam in that river only a mile away.
The real gagging began when I jumped down into the tunnel and landed in what could only be described as the grossest thing ever! My shoes made a horrible squishing noise as I trudged inside. Even though I really didn't want to see what I was in, I pulled out the flashlight. But I never pointed it down! Not even once. Especially not when the sludge started seeping into my shoes.
