Excerpt

Death is inevitable. Death is always premature no matter how old you are. Everyone knows that it will happen to them and to the people they love most in the world. Parents often come to mind first, as we usually survive our parents. This is often the first significant experience we have with death. Even though it may be an event that we can foresee, it takes a greater toll on us than we could ever anticipate or imagine.

Professional Reviews

Book review by Wendy Fifield
I recently lost both my parents about 10 months apart. Working in the field of grief support I thought I had it all covered. I knew what to expect, all the stages to experience…wrong, wrong and wrong. We never know how we are going to react personally to a loss and the loss of both parents close together knocked me flat. At first I did not know what was happening. Finally my physical health brought me to a stop and I realized I needed to look after my mental health first to recover.
When I returned to work after a four month leave of absence I came across a new resource “Baby Boomers Face Grief” by Jane Galbraith. In some ways I wish I’d had the opportunity to read this book months before my parents died to understand what and why I was feeling the way I did. In another way I know I had to experience the journey and work it out myself. This book is a must to read if you have parents living or have lost a parent already. It will prepare you for what lies ahead. I say prepare as you will still experience your grief but will understand and be able to share your feelings with those around you. In her book Jane talks about our society not allowing people to expose their feelings openly. Baby Boomers Face Grief is a great resource for individuals and groups and I am sure will inspire discussion where ever it is read.
We do not choose this road but it will happen to all of us at some point in our life. I thank Jane, for through her book I understand the whys of my journey and am a changed person from the experience.
