OH! ---- OH my goodness! I made a sound out loud that awoke people around me sleeping during Heath’s sermon. My friends looked at me like I just lost my mind. Heath must have noticed or heard my sound as well, as his eyes immediately glanced over towards me, smiled, but quickly turned his head towards the other side. I felt my body gently slipping down and felt the fire on my face, as I know it turned as red as the fire of hell must be.
In Secrets from a Trunk, the narrator, Antoinette, is not who she thinks she is and her true identity is revealed in a journal she has found in a trunk. Discovery of this journal unfolds fascinating and telling events in the lives of nineteenth century society.
Presenting her story with compelling emotion and wit, Clesi combines detailed settings with intellectual character analysis and accurate details of history. She is concerned with the complexity of race, class, and status but eloquently relates how in the rich society of the era there were those who accepted everyone.
Clesi also explores the history of "Southern Gentility". The decorum of good breeding and refinement are introduced as a usual way of life. It also shows that everyone has secrets. Although the characters were "high society" women, Clesi displays the real side of everyone including ostentatious Southern women and a dastardly gentleman. A final twist of events brings everyone to reality.
As a result, Secrets from a Trunk, is a powerful and memorable fiction that is related as though it is a true account. It emphasizes Clesi as an intellectual. Exquisitely written, Secrets from a Trunk, leaves some questions unanswered and the reader hungering to know more.

Secrets from a Trunk is a captivating story of love's ability to changes one's path in life, but not necessarily one's destination. The characters are wonderfully vibrant and full of the vim and vigor that really brings a strength, so often overlooked, to women in the eighteen hundreds of America .
Jill Clesi writes in a refreshing style that really gets you into the mind and heart of her characters. You feel as though you know them so well that the thoughts and dialog fly off the page almost intuitively.
SECRETS FROM A TRUNK was one of the best works I have read. The characters all seemed to jump out of the book. You had a connection with each and every one of them. The book contained lies, love, guilt envy deceit and every human emotion imaginable. As I read each page I was compelled to continue reading. Ms Clesi lured me in with her intro and hooked me with a passion and desire of a seasoned veteran. I hung on to every word. I was fascinated with the rich history of the time. The Author painted a picture that visualized the time and made you feel that you were a part of it.
