“Howdy folks,” Sheriff Willis said to the older couple. “I heard about the
terrible misfortune out in Nevada; give my condolences to the family, won’t you?”
“I’ll do that,” the older man replied.
“Say, whatcha doing there, anyway, Jake?” the sheriff then asked.
“Oh, me and Martha were just feeding the snappers,” Jake told him as he
tossed another sausage link into the small pond.
“You’re feeding the turtles sausage links?”
“Phipps’s Finest…” Jake replied while holding up the red and blue package.
“Boy, I wish I had your money,” the sheriff said grinning. “Wasting good
food on a bunch of old leather shells.”
“No, it’s not like that at all,” Jake told him. “You see, Sheriff, these links went bad…”
