Winner of the national book award, "Children's Choices" co-sponsored by the International Reading Association and the Children's Book Council. Frosty, the second book in the Morgan Horse series, continues the adventures of Heather Richardson and her horse Blackjack. In addition, the story introduces a new character, a rare gray Morgan named Frosty. Through Frosty, Heather realizes that not all horses are meant to be show ring stars. Although disappointed at first, she soon discovers that Frosty's real talent lies in the area of trail riding, and it isn't long before Heather loves this sport. She and Frosty become trail buddies and must learn to trust each other if they are to survive the woods of Vermont...
As the chase continued, Heather was amazed that the deer didn’t veer off the trail into more secluded areas. Perhaps this lovely animal was
enjoying the game just as much as she and Frosty.
Whatever the reason, the game continued until the deer entered what appeared to be the same field where they had started the chase. It was hard for
Heather to tell for sure as the fog prevented her from seeing more than twenty feet ahead of her.
Without any urging, Frosty continued to follow the deer at a fast pace through the field. Galloping to the far end, where the trees once again met the
field, the deer jumped through a thicket of bushes and instantly disappeared. Frosty would have
crashed through the bushes had it not been for Heather, who pulled tight on the reins. The mare raised her head high and opened her mouth, trying
to evade the tight pressure of the bit, and was forced to stop.
“I think that’s enough, Frosty. I can’t see the deer any more and there’s no trail here. I think we lost her.”
Heather turned her mare back in the direction they had come. Frosty was huffing and puffing from the early morning workout and was now happy to be walking. As they took several strides,
Heather slowly looked around her. The fog was thick and unrelenting. There was no trail to follow, no human voices or horse whinnies in the distance. Heather suddenly couldn’t tell from
which direction they had come. Then she realized...they were lost!
A delightful book!
"Frosty: The Adventures of a Morgan Horse is a delightful book with an eye-catching cover. It combines the unbeatable combination of horses and drama, and teen readers, especially girls, will love it. From the first chapter, it captures the reader's interest and sets up an engaging plot: how is this girl going to buy this horse and what will happen if she does? For any kid who loves animals, this is a must read. I especially liked the way the author puts both horses and Heather in jeopardy, yet gets them out convincingly without creating a boring or pat ending. The tension goes right up into the last few pages, and I think readers will really enjoy the feeling of being around stables and arenas and the beautiful horses. The writing is so descriptive that you really feel like you are right there with Heather, Frosty and Blackjack throughout the entire book. This would be a great book for anyone who loves horses or animals in general. Great idea!" - Writer's Digest
