Timothy Wrenn, a shy asthmatic librarian, sees a severely handicapped man being exhibited at a carnival and uses all his money to buy the man's freedom. Thus begins an odd couple story as he tries to civilize the wild man he names Daniel after the man rescued from the den of lions.

timothy Wrenn is a quiet and very tidy librarian. He likes things to be neat and orderly. His main problem is keeping his asthma under control. One day he decides to take a coworker to the local carnival and there sees a handicapped man being exhibited as one of the attractions. He returns later and purchases the man's freedom. He takes him home and tries to maintain the integrity of his immaculate house as he civilizes and learns to communicate with the creature he has named Daniel from the story in the Bible about a man being rescued from a lions' den. He juggles work, his worsening asthma and keeping the man in his house a secret. This can't continue and his world begins to crumble...
