There, in all his obvious lack of glory, was Milford Browne. He wore a shabby, threadbare suit, swept the hat from his head, and announced that everyone knew why he'd gathered them in town. They might as well get on with it. He reached into a brass spittoon stuffed with paper chits and withdrew one. Peered at it for a breathless few seconds, then raised his head to call out the name of the raffle winner.
But before he could open his mouth, a goat appeared in the dirt street beside him and bleated. Milford jerked in surprise. His fingers holding the raffle chit jerked toward the animal. The goat stretched its neck out, snatched the paper, and munched it to bits, swallowing before Milford could react.
For a disbelieving second, no one said anything. Then chaos broke out in the town square.
