Excerpt

That night found Skye soaking in a bathtub at the home she shared with her husband Lawrence. They lived on West Camino Real in the quiet suburb of Royal Oak Hills, Boca Raton. As she lay back in the bubbles, her wavy coffee hair spilled slightly over the side of the whirlpool, and she smiled to herself.
I’m free, she mused. Delpatrick doesn’t own me anymore. Now I can open the interior design firm I’ve always dreamed of.
For a moment, Skye wondered why she had pursued an MBA and the lackluster ways of Corporate America. Then she remembered: it had been her dad’s idea. But now, she was going to pursue her passion. No more endless hours of slaving over a keyboard and a stack of paperwork; sipping stale coffee to stay awake. It was definitely time for a change.
Suddenly, she heard the sound of the front door unlocking downstairs. Lawrence is home, she thought. I can’t wait to tell him!
Skye jumped out of the tub and stood naked in the doorway to the master bedroom, water and suds running down her bronzed body. When Lawrence walked in, a wicked smile graced his lips.
“So, did you…” he began.
“YES!” Skye exclaimed as she ran into his strong arms. “I quit. I’ve never felt so liberated in my life.” She knew he wouldn’t mind her getting his expensive business suit wet. She was naked, after all.
As Skye held on to her husband, she let her eyes linger on his handsome features. Lawrence was an incredibly attractive, mahogany Adonis. His 6’2 frame was built solid like a brick wall; eight years in the Army had left him well-muscled and strong. Staring in to his brown eyes, with their unique and unusual depth, always took her back to the day she met him. Those captivating eyes had called to her, and, like a moth to a flame, she had been unable to resist. After ten years of marriage, Skye had never looked on another man with the desire Lawrence still ignited in her. She knew that they had something rare and beautiful; there was nothing cliché or rehearsed about their feelings toward each other. Skye loved her husband, quite simply, and she relished the closeness they shared.
“Meanwhile,” Skye said ruefully as she pulled away and walked into the bathroom for a towel, “who’s going to tell my Dad?”
“Not me.” Lawrence frowned playfully as he sat down on the blue plush chaise lounge next to their bed and loosened his tie. “Maybe your parent’s won’t notice.”
Skye rolled her eyes as she plopped down at her oak vanity, wrapped in a lavender bath sheet. She dragged a silver plated hairbrush through her damp locks.
“I wish. But you know it was Dad’s brilliant idea that I get the MBA in the first place. He’s always asking about my work. Eventually, I’ll have to tell him I quit.”
“Well,” Lawrence started, now removing his shirt, “I sure don’t want to tell him. I could do without that stress. I’ve got two big cases going. But I’ll be here for moral support, baby.” He rose from the chaise and stood behind her vanity stool, draping his arms over her naked shoulders.
“Why is it the people you love can’t just accept your decisions?” Skye looked up into her husband’s eyes for the answer to her conundrum.
“I’ll always support you one hundred percent.”
“But what about…..” Skye eyed the growing pile of Lawrence’s clothes on the floor near the bed.
“Shhh.” Lawrence placed a finger to her lips. “Don’t worry about it. At least not now. I want to celebrate your newfound liberation.”
“Hmmm,” Skye mused, “what kind of a celebration do you have in mind?” She looked at his reflection in the mirror, trying to read his expression.”
“The best kind.” Lawrence pulled Skye to stand and into his arms.” The kind where I turn you out, baby.”
Skye shook her head at her husband. “After ten years, you’re still horny as a toad. I’ll bite.” She paused, pointing to the floor. “But not until you pick up those damn clothes.”
Ruefully, Lawrence obliged her, tossing his clothes into the white wicker hamper in the walk in closet. Satisfied, she held her arms out to her lovable, but maddeningly messy knight in shining boxers.

Outside, a young man watched the house intently from a sedan parked across the street. He had triple checked the address with his contact, and he knew he had the right house.
1919 West Camino Real.
Nice lawn, a Ford pickup and an SUV in the driveway.
The sleepy little suburban Boca Raton neighborhood was full of old folks, so most of the houses on the street were dark, their occupants in bed for the night. He trained his binoculars on the bedroom window, gazing at the silhouette of two people inside the house.
That must be them.
He could see two figures embracing behind the closed Venetian blinds. The lamplight melded their shadows together, until one of them turned the lights off.
Damn. That’s all I’m going to see for tonight.
There wouldn’t be a lot to report, but it would have to do. Irritated, the man turned away from the now darkened window. He tossed his binoculars into the empty passenger seat, started the car, and left the neighborhood as quietly as he'd come.
