Freya's Bower

A shy secretary has the chance to catch the man of his dreams--if only he can gather the courage to try...

Shy secretary Mark Hanson has a hard time talking to people, especially men. When his building gets a hot new deliveryman, Tim Callahan, Mark is attracted to him right away, but too timid to do anything about it. With the office flirt determined to catch Tim's eye, and the entire office betting on who Tim will ask out first, can Mark find his courage before he loses his chance?  Excerpt
Two days later, Mark sat at his desk eating a late breakfast of miniature powdered donuts and tried to cope with the mountain of work in his inbox. The sound of a throat clearing drew his attention. Tim the delivery guy stood in front of his desk, smiling, packages in hand. He looked even better than he had the last time.

Mark realized he still held one of the little donuts halfway to his mouth and dropped it. Powdered sugar scattered over his desk and the front of his shirt. Little specks dotted his tie.
Shoot me now. Cheeks hot, sure he blushed, Mark managed, "Oh, sorry. I wasn't paying attention."

"I noticed." Tim set the packages on the corner of the desk and held out the clipboard. "I need a signature."

Mark wasted no time taking the clipboard and scrawling his name, more than ready to have this embarrassing situation end. "There you go."

Tim squinted at his signature for a moment. "Mark?"

He nodded.

"Well, thanks, Mark. Have a great day. Oh, and you've got powdered sugar on your lip."

The second Tim left, Mark licked his lower lip, finding the large smear of powdered sugar easily. Where's a huge hole to open up and swallow me when I need one? I won't mind a bit.

Wouldn't the rest of the secretaries love to hear about this?

He skipped lunch.

Professional Reviews
Mark Hanson is a secretary in a law firm. Although confident in his job, he is extremely shy in his personal life. Sure, he’s “one of the girls” in the break room and relates fine with women, but get him around an attractive man and he can barely get out a coherent sentence. When a new delivery man appears in the building, Mark is as tongue-tied and awkward as ever. Tim Callahan is gorgeous, and he has all of the secretaries in a tizzy thinking that his open friendliness to them is in actuality flirting. Soon the ladies are forming a pool to bet on which of them Tim will ask out first. Does Mark even have a chance? If he ever wants a chance at love, he’s going to have to leave the nerves at home and go after what he wants for a change.

Cassandra Gold’s Special Delivery is about a young man who overcomes his shyness in order to find love. This is a story about regular folks with normal everyday jobs, and I find it refreshing that no one is rich and/or powerful or terribly exotic for a change. This story acknowledges that the “average joe” deserves love, too. There is not much of a conflict in Special Delivery, unless you consider Mark’s struggle to overcome his shyness and his competition with the office femme fatale for Tim’s attentions. Regardless, there is an undertone of sweetness to this story as well as the occasional touch of humor that make this a very appealing read.

While Mark Hanson has his skills as a secretary honed to perfection, he could use help with his people skills. Well, not with befriending women but with interacting with other gay men. How can a shy gay man make a connection with other men? Sometimes, all it takes is a simple bet and the belief of a good friend.

Cassandra Gold has written a story filled with humor and the awkwardness of a new relationship in Special Delivery. Mark doesn’t know he is truly a diamond among glass. The man is handsome, sweet and caring. Tim Callahan is the attractive deliveryman who doesn’t use his appearance as a tool to weld for personal gain. Watching these men dance around their attraction brought back tender moments when I would flirt with someone, hoping the feelings was mutual. Of course there is a host of supporting characters whom round out this story. The best friend that pushes you to follow your heart, the woman who thinks she’s God’s gift to men and the peanut gallery who seems to fall into step like a teenage girl with hopes that the popular chick will take pity and befriend her. I couldn’t help but to connect with Mark and Tim in this story. I enjoyed reading this story and look forward to picking up Ms. Gold’s next release.
