A book that will likely be appreciated more by experienced knotters than by novices. Novices won't realize that they're learning via unique shortcuts and techniques. Nor will they notice that much of the end-reeving has been eliminated for many knots. When possible, end movement is limited to a single tuck after all the loops, bights, and twists are in place. Knots that are often "tied on the table" are tied in-hand in 6 seconds.

Kno-Knonsense Knots

Written with first-responders, animal handlers, and outdoorspersons in mind. Includes chapters dealing with "Field Activities" and "Knotting under Adverse Conditions". Formatted and sequenced to be used as a training tool.

More than 250 clear photos that show methods for tying the sixty essential knots. Emphasis is on starting grips that permit "touch-knotting". Touch-knotting makes one-handed knotting and knotting-in-the-dark a snap. More than a third of the knots are tied from one starting grip, called the "pretzel". It takes one second to establish a pretzel grip. From there, you can complete any of twenty knots in another 1 to 6 seconds. Twelve knots are in the "1 to 3" second category.

Instructional photos are stand-alone once you learn the eight symbols used to indicate end movement, loop formation, loop twisting, loop folding, and tightening. The symbols are, for the most part, self-explanatory. Knot formation is shown for each knotting step, along with front-and-back views of completed knots.

Uses (and misuses) of each knot are described.

Excerpt

When jogging on the Serengeti, carry a pre-formed constrictor knot at all times. If charged by a leopard, put the constrictor around its jaws, and pull the ends tight. Many survivors of such encounters report that they were attacked by de-clawed leopards.

Reader Reviews for "Kno-Knonsense Knots"

Reviewed by Ken Medernach 3/8/2008
I started my knotting career way back in the 1940's as a young boy growing up on the Georgia coast, then into the Boy Scouths and the U.S. Coast Guard and later living aboard a sailboat. I wish that I had read through Keneth Van Gorder's Kno-Knownsense Knots a ot earlier, and as a lifelong sailor I found the methodology that Ken used to be extreemly simple and concice, I have been usuing knots and teaching marlinespike seamanship for over 50 years and I wish that I'd had his book for all of those years. Ken has included more than 250 clear photos show methods for tying the 60 essential knots. A third of the knots are tied from the same starting point (a formation that he calls "the pretzel"). The pretzel, which may be formed in one second, makes learning faster and recall easier. Basic knotting under normal conditions is covered first, followed by a chapter on using knot combinations and using knots for outdoor activities. The final chapter covers emergency/survival knotting. It includes one-handed knotting, cold-hand knotting, and knotting in the dark. There are no trick knots involved. Just special methods for knotting-by-touch. Anyone can learn trouble-time knotting. Questions? Ask the author at chemp.earthlink.net. I did,

This book is a necessity for the novice and an asset to the expert, Ken Van Gorder may "knot have been a Boy Scout, but he will keep you tiied up for hours and you will find yourself returning to his text when those "Knotty Situations Arise"

This book could be a lifesaver, I have added it to my "Seabag"

This will be the best $15.00 you have ever spent for 156 pages on Knot Knowledge, 7.44" x 9.68", perfect binding, black ink on white paper and there is a full color version that just came out and I have my copy on order
